Year 1 News

From Joey, Year 1 teacher
Phonics Program
In Reading, we are excited to introduce our students to the Phonics Plus program this year. All Year 1 students are settling into this new morning routine, developing and consolidating their phonics and word knowledge through activities such as high-frequency word practice, letter-sound manipulation, oral reading, spelling, choral reading, and more.
We revisited letter names and sounds, the concepts of vowels and consonants, and digraphs, including sh, ch, qu, th, and ng. Students also worked with consonant-vowel-consonant-consonant (CVCC) and consonant-consonant-vowel-consonant-consonant (CCVCC) words, applying them in sentences. It is amazing to see our students' whiteboards filled with their learning and thinking every day.
After the Phonics program, students had the opportunity to enjoy quality literature through shared and independent reading. They also participated in reading conference groups, reading with teachers and working on comprehension strategies.
Wellbeing
Students explored the Zones of Regulation, a framework that categorises emotions into four colour-coded "zones" representing different feelings. Students practised using emotional vocabulary to describe their feelings and identified tools and strategies to help regulate their emotions and behaviour.
