Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO) Excursion

On a bright July day earlier this term, Lyndale music students set off to see the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO) perform at the Melbourne Recital Centre.

After arriving in the city, this motley crew of music kids took a short detour through Hosier Lane, stopping along the cobblestone path to take pictures of each other and the colourful graffitied walls. With our art-appreciation sensors warmed up by the vibrant visuals of the city’s street art, it was time to head off to the Melbourne Recital Centre for a one of a kind musical and educational experience.

The MSO’s program was an exploration of the parallel world and works of the 20th century English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams and Melbourne’s own Mary Finsterer. Interwoven through the orchestra’s performance of pieces from these composers, were the presenter’s insights into the context of the compositions, what inspired them as well as explanations of their structure and motifs (recurring musical ideas).

Of course, the performance was an auditory treat, with many of us sat in awe thinking, “Is this even live, or are they playing a recording over the speakers?”. But this was also quite the educational experience; to have the music theory we learn in our instrumental lessons and band rehearsals come to life on a professional stage in such an insightful and interactive way.

Overall, we had a great time! A big thank you to our teachers, Mr Rault, Ms Van Oosten and Ms Edwards for organising this wonderful day filled with music, learning and fun!
