Term 3 Humanities Report 2023

This Term in Humanities Years 7-9 have been learning about the world of Economics with a focus on entrepreneurship and financial literacy. Years 7 and 8 students have explored the concept of Budgeting and how it can be a useful tool for achieving long and short term savings goals.

Year 8 students have focused on how to establish a business and take advantage of the changing situations around us.

Year 10 Business and Economics classes have been tracking the stock market to develop their understanding of investments and the Legal Studies classes have been learning about the rule of law and the effect of crime in society. In History, Year 10s have been investigating the causes and effects of World War Two and Civil Rights Movement of the 20th Century.

In other news this Term, four LSC students attended the Model United Nations Assembly at Nossal Highschool. The students had the opportunity to listen to ‘inspirational speeches, debate resolutions and exchange diplomatic notes’ with other like minded students.

In VCE History, the Year 12 Revolutions class went to Melbourne CBD and the Chinese Museum to make connections between Chinese history and Australia.

Enjoy the break and we look forward to exploring Geography in Humanities in Term 4.

2023 Model United Nations Assembly Event

Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Greater Dandenong and Endeavour Hills, four Lyndale Secondary College students attended the Model United Nations Assembly at Nossal Highschool on Saturday the 20th of August (yes, we willingly did a School Thing on the weekend). Students Danya Daoud of year 12 and Joey Miller of year 11 represented Saudi Arabia, and students Sharanky Sivakumar and Devasena Karthikeyan of year 10 represented India.

“We were lucky to receive the support of Miss Graham at the event!”

"The 2023 Model United Nations was a surreal experience, like a carbon copy of the actual UN!
Arriving, at Nossal on the day, I stepped into the hall with mixed feelings of anxiety... but it all dispersed when the Rotary Club members and guest speakers gave their inspirational speeches, amalgamated with the interaction of other students. The atmosphere only became all the more comfortable when it was time to have a (heated) debate on the 4 resolutions. To have spoken for two resolutions and gain insight on the many opinions of like-minded students was definitely the highlight for me. Not only this, but forming allies, proposing amendments and exchanging diplomatic notes was an opportunity to make friends and have fun!! (It also made the event seem super professional!!!). I had felt especially proud to represent my native country: India, and speak on behalf of their views and values. Overall, the outcome of the day was fantastic, and I will definitely be doing it again!!!"

Year 12 Revolutions Excursion

On 15th August this term the Year 12 Revolutions class went to Melbourne CBD and the Chinese Museum to make connections between Chinese history and Australia. In Revolutions students study the causes and consequences of the Chinese Revolution. This excursion allowed students to learn about the context of the revolution and the impacts of Chinese history on our world today.

Here is the experience of one of our students:

“We started off with an exhilarating scavenger hunt that required us to put our heads together, using our historical knowledge to crack codes and find key locations. After a dose of active, healthy competition, we took a break to enjoy some food and conversation. Then, we rushed off to the Chinese Museum tucked away in a little alley. Unassuming on the outside, this museum held a fantastic collection of Chinese cultural artefacts and a vast array of information relating to various stages of Chinese history. We learned that it also housed the 2nd largest artificial dragon in the world! Overall, this excursion gave us an opportunity to interact with the Chinese culture and customs we have been learning about, as well as learn about China's history outside of the time period we have focused on.” – Haleemah
