PRINCIPAL'S REPORT

What an exciting week we have had. So many wonderful learning opportunities for the students including the first excursion for our Foundation students! They were so excited to go on a bus together and visit Edendale Farm. The Year 2’s had their camp experience and Year 4 had Outdoor Education days. Year 3 continued their science incursions and Year 1 and Year 6 went on excursions to the Melbourne Zoo and Immigration Museum & Museum of Chinese Australian History. Special thank you to the teachers for organising the days and to the volunteers who went and assisted in making the days possible.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF COUNTRY

Milgate Primary School would like to acknowledge the traditional owners of the land of the Wurundjeri People and we would like to pay our respects to the elders both past and present. Staff, students and the school community understand that we thrive, learn and live on Wurundjeri Country and we stand with all cultures united as one.

FOUNDATION | Edendale Farm Excursion

To celebrate the start of our Sharing the Planet Inquiry, Foundation students visited Edendale Farm to learn about the responsibility we all have to take care of the Earth. Students went on a farm tour, fed chickens and sheep and were risk takers when they held worms from their worm farm. We learnt that a tree has to be at least 200 years old for a kookaburra to make a nest in the hollow trunk and a worm has 5 hearts! A wonderful day was had by all.

YEAR 6 | Excursion

Immigration Museum & Museum of Chinese Australian History

For our ‘Where we are in place and time’ unit of inquiry, the Year 6’s visited the Immigration Museum and the Museum of Chinese Australian History. In the Immigration Museum, we investigated various artefacts and documents to discover people’s migration stories. Then, we explored and students inquired into the journeys and challenges of migration. In the Museum of Chinese Australian History, a tour guide showed us the history of Chinese inventions, the importance of the Chinese dragon, and the push and pull factors relating to migration.

YEAR 1 | Melbourne Zoo Excursion

As part of our 'Sharing the planet' unit of inquiry, the Year Ones visited the Melbourne Zoo. We explored different animal habitats and the impact humans have had on living things and the environment. Students were inquirers as they asked questions which we will research further at school. They were risk-takers and resilient as they braved the rain and cold weather. We had a wonderful day and would like to thank our amazing parent helpers for making the day a success!

YEAR 4 | Outdoor Ed Days

During the Year 4 Outdoor Education Day, students participated in a range of exciting activities. They navigated the waters of Lilydale Lake Park through kayaking, enhancing their resilience and learning important life skills in a water environment. Additionally, engaging in orienteering and team building exercises helped them further develop their collaborative abilities. Although the rain has posed challenges to some of these activities, it was a great opportunity to explore students' determination and eagerness to participate in outdoor adventures. We are looking forward to further opportunities to participate in outdoor adventures!

YEAR 6 | Exhibition

Hello we are Felicity, Grace and Jane from 6KB. As you know Exhibition night, and day is on October 25th.

Our Exhibition is about how gender impacts people. But how does it impact people? Keep on reading to find out…..

Gender equality is one of the biggest problems in the world. Everyday we are trying to solve it. Did you know the average full time weekly wage for women  is 15.3% less than a mans. Imagine how much money you could lose if you were a woman?

Gender can and will impact progression with employment. In 2015-2016 the average superannuation balance for women aged 60-65 years was just over half (58%) compared to men.

We also have a collective responsibility for equality. But first of all. What is equality? Equality is when all genders have equal rights, responsibilities and opportunities. Treating everyone the same with no discrimination.

Now you know what it is, we have a responsibility to start pushing for equality. Here are some ways to help. Get women into power and make education gender-friendly for all girls around the world.

In the 21st century now everyone deserves to have rights made by the United Nation. But it wasn’t always like this. Back in the 19th century women were only allowed to “take care of kids”; they weren’t even allowed to vote or have a say.

Thank you for reading our little introduction. We hope to see you on the night of Exhibition and students on the day! Remember “Women's rights are human rights” so treat every gender like they are human.

2024 CLASS CONSIDERATIONS/PLACEMENT REQUESTS

Closing Date | Friday 27 October

The placement of students for the coming year is a complex process where teachers and leadership put great thought and sensitivity into the planning. When developing individual classes each year, teachers and leadership consider a number of factors including academic ability, social competencies, gender, students who do/do not work well together and friendship groupings important to the social and emotional development of the child. While the students are consulted about current friendships, it is only one of the criteria considered because building new relationships is also part of our education process and an essential skill for students to develop. We discuss, reflect and review our decisions thoughtfully over a significant period of time.

As part of this process, parents are invited to offer their insights. If students have any learning or social needs to be considered when placing them in classes for 2024, parents can email David Mander and request the online form to complete. Please email david.mander@education.vic.gov.au

Please note, that we do not retain previous years’ requests as students’ needs and friendships change from year to year. If the consideration from a previous year is still important, parents will still need to request the form from David.

Additionally, multiple student friend requests or requests that impact another student’s class placement cannot be considered in the process. Parents are also not able to request specific teachers. The closing date for these considerations is Friday 27th October.

Any requests received after this date are not able to be taken into account.
