Learning Community 3

Glenys Howard and Nicole Stark

Thank you so much to all the friends and relatives who were able to attend our final Earn and Learn trading session at the end of last term. The weather was terrific and helped add to the fantastic atmosphere. This program is a real-life program designed to help students gain some knowledge about money, how it's earnt and where it goes. I hope you all enjoyed some healthy conversations anout taxes and supernnuation!

Maths this week has included reading maps and timetables. We have looked at the Sovereign Hill visitor map and timetable of activities, the train timetable to Melbourne and the school's specialist time table. Last week we completed a unit of work on lines, angles and use of a protractor.

Reading and writing tasks have centred around learing about life on the goldfields and the inpact the gold rush had on Australian society. We have read about rules for children and teachers in the 1800's and have prepared our character roles ready to enter into the past. All students have complete a letter addressed to their new teacher telling them something of their lives, their journeys to Australia and then on to Ballarat. The creation of a letter, is a great way for students to demonstrate their understanding of various concepts we are studying.

Although some tasks are specifically focussed upon preparing our students for their experience at camp, the learning is relevant for all students. Any students not attending camp will be provided an alternate program at school.

If you have any questions about the up-coming camp please contact us.

Thank you!
