Delahey Campus Principal Message

Delahey Campus Principal’s Report

The sentimental end of the year round of events approaches us once again at Delahey. Students are starting to realise that they are running up against various ‘last times’. Last Monday we brought all of Year 12 together for musical performances and a box lunch and had our final class photo with all of our Year 12 students. The reason that we must do this photo so early on is that students who are not completing VCE Exams are already starting to finish off all their required outcomes and moving on into the world of work. The end of school in Year 12 doesn’t come on the same day for every student and with the upcoming celebrations we always have a few students turning up in high vis or other uniforms as they move straight into the workforce from school.

The excellent 2023 student leadership group at Delahey have once again organised several events between last council meeting and this one. On 18 August we had our first ‘cosy day’ which involved musical performances in the gym (out of the cold wind!) and students coming to school in pyjamas or similar cosy and warm clothes as we farewelled one of the last cold days of winter and had a little mental health break as students moved into final assessments and then exams.

On 25 August students and staff got their purple and rainbow gear on for Wear It Purple Day an annual LGBTIQA+ awareness day especially for young people. Supporters wear purple to celebrate diversity and young people from the LGBTIQA+ community. Student leaders organised a bake sale and raised $247 for Minus18, a charity dedicated to improving the lives of LGBTQIA+ youth. As always, we had a big turn out from staff happy to fly the purple flag and make sure everyone feels welcome and included in our school community.

On 5 September a small group of students from both Year 11 and Year 12 met with staff from the National Broadband Network for ‘My Career Rules”. A workshop in which the panellists, who are all working professionals, share their career journeys and answer student's career questions in an online Q&A facilitated by our partners from ABCN. Students asked their own prepared questions of the panellists during the session and had a great opportunity to think about their own post school pathways.

Our VM Students have been busy with their major end of year presentations and events. On 16 and 18 August students in our Year 12 Projects presented their final projects to their project partners from Western Health and other community groups and shared the process of making the beautiful artworks, seats, bookshelves, sensory board as well as fundraising events that were a feature of Year 12 Projects this year. It was quite moving to see the engagement of the students in their projects and the positive benefits their work brings to their local community. Year 12 VM Students then went on to present their Future Pathways presentation on 28 August and 30 August. These presentations are a summary of the learning journey students have made over the full two years in the VM program and showcase students’ future plans for their careers.

There are always many tears shed as students and teachers look back and see how far they have come over this time. The final major VM Event for the year is the Year 11 Project Showcase which happens early next term. This is not only a chance for Year 11 students to showcase their project achievements over the year, but also a final assessment for Year 12 students who organise the event and an introduction to the VM program for our Year 10 students who come across to Delahey from our Kings Park and Sydenham campuses for the event.

We are moving fast towards the end of the year now with Delahey staff planning a dance rehearsal on Wednesday to prepare for our Celebration Day send off the class of 2023. It is always sad to see them go but it is great to see them get out into the world and grow into the adults they been becoming in the time we have had them with us.

Signing off for the moment.

Stay happy, healthy and safe
