Fresh Food Fair Cooking!

There is a buzz in the kitchen at the moment with preparation happening for our Fresh Food Fair. We have been cooking our veggie curries, pumpkin soup and roti in classes which have been taste tested at our Shared Table.  All getting the big thumbs up!

A big thank you to all our volunteers over the holidays and during our Term 4 cooking sessions for helping make our sausage rolls, pasties, preserves and flat bread. We couldn’t do it with you and the energy around our fair preparation is so wonderful to be a part of.

Nude Food

Nude Food is officially starting again.  Of course, we would love every day to be a nude food day but Friday is the day where we will be tallying up our Nude Food stars.  Each fortnightly assembly the class with the most Friday nude food lunch boxes will be awarded the Nude Food trophy.  Such a great way to reduce our school waste and to keep our school grounds clean. Thanks everyone for your enthusiasm so far.

Garden News

The weather is beautiful for gardening.

Our year 5s are working on bird habitat box design and function. This fortnight they worked together to create an artistic design to paint on the outside of birdboxes later in term.

This week in The Patch, the students worked tirelessly on making the garden look fabulous for fresh food fair. Everyone took real pride in The Patch and filled buckets with weeds for the chookys to eat.

Our creative crews wrote letters to the land, a Junior Landcare initiative and participated in the Aussie Bird Count.

This weeks Garden Tip:

With the weather warming up, it is important to keep up the water to plants in pots.

Plants in containers dry out a lot faster than plants in the ground. Pots absorb heat, which can stress plant roots, and the soil in them dries out much faster than soil in the ground.

Some plants will need to be watered daily others every other day. To check the moisture in your pots, simply stick your finder in the top 1-2 cm of soil. If it feels damp or comes out with soil sticking to it, then they are OK. If they are dry or soil hard to dig, then give the pot a good soaking. Make sure the pot drains well. Roots will rot if sitting on excess water for long periods. You can also apply a layer of mulch to protect the soil and reduce evaporation.

Classroom Food Scraps

Our Food Scrap Friday volunteers are helping out with our classroom food scrap collection.  It’s so wonderful to divert all our food scraps from landfill, and our garden and chookies will love it too.  A big thank you to our students for getting behind this and making sure our compost bins are put to good use.

Please continue to bring your household scraps to the garden every Friday morning.  It's great to see our measured mass of food scraps grow each week.

Plastic Bottle Lid Recycling

Bring your bottle lids to school to be recycled.  Our Environment club are very passionate about repurposing these pieces of plastic. Either send them in with students to add to each class collection or you can take them directly to the office.

Watch out for our Christmas gifts that we will be selling at the end of term.  Made from our local Southern Ocean Environmental Link (SOEL) program.
