School/Student Leadership at Holy Family
Student leadership at Holy Family has been evolving over the years, in part due to our involvement with the Leader in Me and in part due to natural growth and change within Holy Family. This evolution has seen changes to the opportunities we see for student leadership and the language we use.
Following is an outline of the structure and process that works to redress the dislocation between policy and practice in terms of student leadership at Holy Family giving more clarity to opportunities and expectations into the many ways our students can contribute to our learning community.
All Year 5 and 6 students belong to the leadership group at Holy Family. There are opportunities for students within this cohort to serve the school community in various groups and as team leaders of those groups. These leadership roles will generally, but not always exclusively, come from the Year 6 group. Following is an outline of the current leadership roles and responsibilities and the process involved in attaining the various roles.
The Holy Family Student Leadership structure exists to:
- Encourage, and provide opportunities for, servant leadership and Catholic discipleship.
- Represent and be the face of the school to reach out to others, within the school, the parish and broader community.
- Provide leadership training and experience so that the potential of each student is achieved.
- Create a Catholic learning community which nurtures and inspires others.
In general, the Team Leaders have displayed some of the following dispositions:
-Empathy for others and a strong moral conscience
-Relational – relates well to others.
-A desire to serve the school and initiative in doing so.
-Is organised and reliable.
-Demonstrates the 7 Habits in action.
Preparation and procedure for appointment of School Leaders:
-The Stage 3 students meet and discuss ‘What it is like being a leader at Holy Family’.
-The current 2023 Leaders share their experiences of being a leader and their role as part of leadership, how it feels to be a leader and any ‘handy hints’.
The following process is explained to the Year 5 students:
-The Year 5 students have the opportunity to nominate themself.
-A letter application is presented to the principal.
-The Year 5 students who are nominated and accept nomination then prepare short talks about themselves and how they would be a good leader.
-The students gather in the hall and listen to the talks from the children nominated for the school leader roles. Each student from Years 2-6 is given a voting slip on which they make their selection. Staff are also asked to vote.
-Voting slips are collated by and results discussed with class teachers.
-A shortlist is compiled from votes and discussions with staff.
-Students on the shortlist are interviewed by the Principal and Assistant Principal.
