Year 11 Leaders Discuss and Debate

Creating Futures Together

Year 11 Leaders Discuss and Debate – “Are High Schools teaching the skills necessary for modern life?”

A few weeks ago, we went on an excursion that some of our Year 11 students had the privilege to attend. Organised by Nick Molan, this event was an enlightening experience for all involved.

Our students were invited by Mater Christi's Year 11 student representative council to participate in the Local Schools Convention. The theme for this year's convention was a thought-provoking one: "Are High Schools teaching the skills necessary for modern life?" It's a question that resonates with educators, students, and parents alike, and our students were eager to dive into the discussion. Other schools were also there.

The day, held on Thursday 31st August, was packed with student-led activities in the morning, setting the stage for an engaging presentation by the guest speaker, Andrew Douche. Many of our staff members might recall the insightful professional development session with Andrew earlier this term. His talk at the convention was just as captivating, if not more. He delved deep into the evolving landscape of skills that employers seek, comparing the requirements from a decade ago to the present and projecting into the future. It was a revelation to witness the shift in skill sets and understand the implications for our educational system.

But the highlight of the day? Our very own Molly Downie took the stage during the debate segment, representing our school with eloquence and passion. Her arguments were compelling, her delivery impeccable, and her confidence unwavering. Molly's performance was nothing short of stellar, and we couldn't be prouder.

We'd like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to Nick Molan for orchestrating this invaluable experience for our students. Opportunities like these not only broaden our students' horizons but also equip them with the skills and perspectives to navigate the ever-changing world.

To our Year 11 students who attended and participated, we commend you for your enthusiasm, your engagement, and your exemplary representation of our school. And to Molly, a massive kudos for your outstanding performance!
