STUDENT ACTION AND LEADERSHIP TEAM
This year our student leaders elected to have a focus on embracing student diversity. The Student Diversity Group started the year with an Italian themed lunch, with Italian food prepared by Cate in the Canteen and Italian games available in the STEAM.
Two students embraced the opportunity to attend the Together for Humanity Youth Summit in Melbourne. Abbey and April prepared a presentation about LGBTQIA+ inclusion and spoke in front of a range of schools and political representatives.
At school we recognised Pride Week, Wear it Purple Day and the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. Our school community embraced each casual day and participated enthusiastically in photo shoots.
Behind the scenes, the Student Diversity Group were also working on a ‘All are Welcome Here’ sticker that has been sent to businesses in our community. The sticker uses the school logo, to represent youth, and has the colours of the LGBTQIA+ flag and Disability flag on each wing. Businesses can display these stickers to welcome everyone into their stores. April and Rhys presented this initiative to the Korumburra Round Table and it was very well received. Look out for them around town over summer!
Year 10 students organised and set up a diversity dash for the staff and students to run through. The event celebrated the diversity of people in our community. Coloured powders were released, bubbles were made and everyone had a wonderful time. All funds raised were donated to the organisation Headspace (youth mental health).
Our Environment group started the year with a fun overnight camp to Wilsons Promontory. There we investigated a range of ecosystems by participating in some hikes and adventures around Tidal River. A highlight was the night walk, hearing ghost stories and spotting possums, as well as the ‘friendly’ Rosellas who came to farewell us when we packed up our tents. In March, the Enviro group also went snorkelling at Twin reefs in the Bass Coast Marine Reserve where they saw Stingrays, Flathead, Parrot fish, Taylor and a variety of sea plants.
The Enviro Group also worked with Ms Strickland to get our school composting system running well. Students built the compost bins so they are close to the kitchen allowing us to recycle most of our food waste.
To end the year, Enviro Group were hosted by the Save Westernport Woodlands group to explore the wildlife corridors around Westernport Bay. Students had the opportunity to hear about the threatened species that live in the reserves, and how the expansion of the sand mines affects their habitat and survival.
We welcome any students with an interest in the environment to Enviro Group – keep your eyes peeled early next year for some opportunities and events.
