  LEADERSHIP MESSAGE

Wow! What a fantastic year we have had at Korumburra Secondary College in 2023. Together we have achieved so many wonderful outcomes for our students.

This year started with the opening of our new Middle School Learning Hub. I remember back to welcoming staff, students and parents into this fantastic new building for the first time at our Student 360s to start the year. Our Middle School Learning Hub provides a wing dedicated to our Year 7 students, ten modern and bright classrooms, a new library, staffroom and arcade for Year 8 and 9 students’ lockers.

Our new Bunji Gym was then opened at the start of Term Two. This provides a competition sized gymnasium, new Performing Arts facilities including Instrumental Music studio as well as two further classrooms. With the STEAM building still only 5 years old, it’s fantastic for the students of our community to have the most modern facilities available to them right across the school.

While we were opening these new buildings, we also had works continuing in the yard and we all had to manage the inconvenience of construction still taking place around us. All staff and students showed tremendous resilience during this time and the completion of the building project was one of the real highlights of this year.

In our classrooms this year our staff and students continued to shine with fantastic learning happening every day. As I walk around the school every day, I see our staff and students working together with positive connections, focussed on achieving high quality learning in every classroom.

It was wonderful to have some occasions to show off some of this work to our parents and community as well. Our 2023 Art Show at the end of the year showed off the amazing final pieces of work of our senior Art and Technology students. In October our Like Minds class created a Body Systems Museum for our community as part of a unit in Science.

2023 was also a significant year for a number of our school programs with VCAL being transformed into the Vocational Major program, leading to greater mixing of all Year 11 and 12 students in classes. Activate, our Signature Alternate Learning Environment program, doubled in size as we created a second class for Year 8 students and Like Minds, our Signature Extension and Enrichment program, also added a second class for 2024.

The school production in September this year was another real highlight for our school in 2023. The script was fully written, the music was fully composed, and the whole show produced by our incredible staff of Liesl Reymers, Rosie Handley, Rhiannen John and Izzy Kennedy. Events such as these only occur when staff and students are prepared to go above and beyond the normal day-to-day schooling, and the skills, knowledge and capabilities developed through opportunities such as this are invaluable. I thank all staff for their work on this, and congratulate all students who took up the opportunity to be a part of this amazing activity.

We had success on the sporting field as well with a significant number of sporting teams representing the school this year. Multiple representatives at the state swimming, cross country, and athletics finals, as well as our senior boys’ volleyball team reaching the state finals were just a couple of particular highlights.

I would like to finish by thanking all staff, students and parents for their ongoing work this year. Our whole community truly is committed to working together to achieve fantastic outcomes for our students. I wish everyone a safe and happy Christmas and holiday period, and I look forward to working with everyone again in 2024.
