Parking Matters!

Orange City Council

Parking Enforcement Team

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome to the new School Year, and the challenge of School Drop-off and Pick-up – a new challenge for many of you. Please be advised that Orange City Council carries out regular parking patrols in and around schools during pick up and drop off periods. These patrols are aimed at ensuring the safety of all of our school children, and the general public.

No Parking Signs - What do the “No Parking” signs mean?

There is often some confusion around the ‘No Parking Zone’ rules that apply around schools. The following information will assist members of the school community to better understand the parking controls around schools.

No Parking zones are places where you may pull in to drop off or pick up passengers. The NSW Road Rules allow you to stay up to 2 minutes while dropping off or picking up passengers in No Parking zones. The rules also allow you to get out to help unload – but the driver is required to stay within 3 meters of the vehicle.

Note: Those vehicles displaying a valid Mobility Permit have a 5 minutes time allowance, and can leave the vehicle to assist the permit holder to the nearest practical safe location before moving on.

No Parking areas are there to provide an option for a quick drop off or pick up - if you want to park and walk your child into the school or go in to collect them, or just want take the opportunity to catch up with other parents - a No Parking zone is not recommended.

Why are School Zones patrolled?

Enforcing Parking Law in School Zones is an important part of what Council’s Parking Enforcement Team does – for the improved safety of the school children, and the general public. Please get to know the area in and around the school and find the best option for you to safely and legally drop off or pick up.

Please avoid stopping in Bus Zones and No Stopping Zones, and don’t be tempted to Double Park – hefty fines and demerit points may apply in those circumstances.

Safe driving!
