Grade 1 and 2
Literacy
The last couple of weeks we have developing wonderful work habits to continue to be great readers and writers. We have been exploring genres and what we are interested in. The spread is out of this world! From comics, to fairytales, to action, to non-fiction texts about animals, natural disasters and more.
We have also been focusing on the recount text type. Students have worked on the planning and drafting process and will continue to work on building editing and publishing skills. Our focus has also been on the correct use of punctuation and spelling techniques to assist in creating engaging pieces of work. Most importantly, in reading and writing, students are developing their understandings around the important role punctuation plays in our texts.
“If we don't use the correct punctuation, things can get even more confusing for readers." "Punctuation marks can tell the reader when to slow down, speed up or stop reading."
"An ellipsis tells us to pause because there is more information to come."
Finally, punctuation, such as talking marks, can show when characters are talking and question marks show that the sentence is a question."
Numeracy
We are exploring all things numbers. This involves counting forwards and backwards, skip counting, patterns and place value.
Students have been building skills around describing number sequences resulting from skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s and as a challenge counting backwards from a given number by 2s, 5s and 10s. We have been creating paper strip patterns, reinforcing basic facts and number knowledge. Start with ones - 1, 2, 3, 4, then twos - 2, 4, 6, 8. fives, tens and 3s, 4s, 6s for a challenge! We have also enjoyed singing skip counting songs together! Skip counting on the Pop Its are a HIT!
The Magic Show
This had us laughing for the whole hour. Harry had the best time tricking the magician with his magic wand that kept bending. We were then taught some magic tricks that we could practice and show others.
'Tim was really funny' - Otto (Grade 2)
'It was very fun' - Paige (Grade 2)
'My favourite part was when he kept bringing out bigger and bigger wands' - Milla (Grade 2)
