Career, Pathways and VET News

Welcome back to the school year for 2024 and the first Career, Pathways and Vocational Education and Training (VET) update for the year.

It has been a busy start to the year for the careers department. I spent 2 days at Residential Camp with the Year 12 students, experiencing dorm life at Ormond College and a day at the University of Melbourne. The highlight for me was experiencing the architecture of these grand old buildings, while also spending time with the students, they are an amazing group and I so look forward to seeing what they will achieve this year and beyond.

I would also like to give a BIG THANKS to our ex-students that made the journey into Ormond College to be on our student panel. We were fortunate to have two  students who are studying at the University of Melbourne share their story and two students who completed Year 12 last year with the VCE and VCE-VM give some invaluable information to our current students.

VET courses also started back for our year 11 and 12 students with a staggered start, from ? 31 January which has kept everyone on their toes as they travel from Scoresby to Box Hill Tafe, Nelson and Lilydale campus, Swinburne in Croydon and Wantirna, Chisholm both the Dandenong and Berwick Campus along with multiple other providers around our region.

We have students completing Certificates in Building and Construction, Sound Production, Plumbing, Horticulture, Early Childhood, Outdoor Recreation, Automotive, Hair and Beauty, Screen and Media and Small Business just to name a few. I wish all the best to our VET students in 2024.

Structured Work Placements for our VCE-Vocational Major students will begin on the 16th of February. They all have been working very hard on completing the required VCE Unit and the required Occupational Health and Safety modules at school and will be more than ready to face the challenges ahead of them.

Some benefits of structured work placement  and  work experience at Year 10 are:

  • improved understanding of the work environment and employers’ expectations
  • exposure to the world-of-work•
  • increased self-understanding, maturity, independence, and self-confidence, especially in the workplace
  • increased motivation to continue study and/or undertake further training
  • enhanced opportunities for part-time and casual employment
  • opportunity to develop and gain work-related competencies
  • opportunity to acquire skills relevant to the workplace
  • opportunity to try out career choices before leaving school
  • opportunity to develop contacts with potential employers.
