Being Well at Magill
Welcome Back Everyone!
Once again, the start of the year holds significant importance for our school community as both children and staff adjust to their new classrooms. The primary focus remains on fostering relationships, establishing routines, and implementing structures—all essential elements contributing to the well-being of our students at Magill. This year, we are introducing a renewed approach to well-being, adding a fresh perspective to our ongoing commitment.
Magill School remains committed to prioritising well-being within our school community. To achieve this, the assembly schedule has undergone a transformation, creating dedicated time to provide a more supportive and nurturing environment.
Students will now meet once every three weeks instead of fortnightly, with a whole school assembly occurring on the last Friday of each term. Complemented by Inside Magill, families have ample opportunities to stay informed about their child's classroom activities—simply tune in to Spotlight on Learning or attend an assembly.
What's been going on...
The surplus time created by our new format opens possibilities for buddy classes to come together. It emphasises the cultivation of a sense of school and peer belonging throughout the entire school. It allows classes to dedicate quality time to work on establishing positive relationships, routines and structures. Teachers have been taking full advantage of this with positive results. Here is a snap shot of our first two weeks.
F2 - Year 6
Year 6 students have created an identity wall based on what their top five character strengths are.
F14 and F15 - Year 5
F14 and F15 have worked together in small groups to complete a Design and Tech activity. They discussed the benefits of working together collaboratively for both students and teachers. Solar ovens were designed and built (it's summer). Students then cooked s'mores outside in the sun using the ovens, before eating the treats, all of which were allergy and halal-friendly.
F8 - Year 4
F8 tuned in to a kids helpline session which teaches children strategies for staying safe in a variety of situations.
N2 - Year 1
N2 collaborated to create their own classroom agreement.
M1- Year 2
Wellbeing Activity - "The Colour Monster" This activity was all about recognising feelings and emotions and how to manage them.
N10 and N11
Buddy classes N11 and N10 met in the first week for a healthy snack and shared the story of Willy the Wizard which talks about the challenges and feelings that Willy faced in trying to make it into a soccer team. We then went to visit N10's classroom to spend time with our buddies playing Emotions Bingo.
Year 6 Peer Support
The year six students have been remarkable in their support for our brand-new reception students during playtime over the last two weeks. They have given up their playtime to support activities which have helped our new students feel welcome, safe and calm.
All The Best Donna
On other matters, we must bid farewell to Donna Kingston, our Pastoral Care Worker. Donna has secured a full-time position elsewhere, and while we celebrate her success, her departure is undeniably a loss for us. Wishing you the very best in your future endeavours, Donna; you will be sincerely missed!
