Dear fellow members of the JMSS Community,
An incredibly busy yet exciting term three continues. Here is a summary of only some of the major events and programs that are either currently in motion or have been successfully completed:
Joel Tan, Year 11, a member of the Australian team in the International Earth & Environmental Science Olympiad in Beijing, China, returned to JMSS with three medals –Gold, Silver, and Bronze, from different stages of the event. Joel’s achievement has surely spurred others to get involved in these events, judging by his reception at the whole school assembly last week.
Year 12 student Vanessa Luong was selected to participate on the Department of Treasury and Finance, Mentoring Women program for 2024. She has been attending seminars at the Department over the last couple of months. She will also be participating in some activities in the first week of the holidays with Economists andGovernment ministers. Vanessa applied based on her own initiative and was selected based on her written application expressing her interest and her passion for Economics.
Year 11 student Alex Betts won the Victorian School's Senior Epee Fencing Championships recently, representing JMSS in doing so. There were 50 competitors in total, which makes Alex’s achievement all the more noteworthy. He is shown here with his medal. Alex is yet another example of a JMSS student involved in a field of endeavor outside the norm when it comes to sport. Over the many years I have been here I have just been in awe of the pursuits our students follow. Great work Alex, JMSS is proud of you!
Year 10 student Bai Yang Pogos-Hill entered the Spirit of Anzac Prize earlier this year, and was excited to be selected as one of the recipients. Last week he attended the Victorian Parliament to receive his award. He will be travelling to Turkey for a 10 day study tour with 11 other students in the September School Holidays. Here he is pictured with Minister for Veteran Affairs Natalie Suleyman and the Minister for Tourism and Major Events Steve Dimopolous. Congratulations Bai Yang and we look forward to hearing all about the study tour!
Last week three JMSS students, Aarika Bindiganavile and Imogen Greenwood Mayes from Year 10, and Samkit Jain in Year 12, represented JMSS at the annual Queensland Academy of Science, Mathematics and Technology Science Fair. Unfortunately, Year 10 student Isabel Lau was unable to attend. They were joined by teacher Ms. Jess Perry and myself. The week featured a number of science excursions, talks, presentations and events, and was a memorable experience for allof us. Their project, ‘Investigating the Efficiency of Microbial Fuel Cells when Turning Different Types of Food Waste into Energy’, won great plaudits at the fair, and a prize at the closing ceremony. Well done team!
Course Counselling Season
Early Term 3 involves Information Nights for most of our students, and importantly for those moving into Years 11 and 12 next year, as they begin to formulate appropriate courses which will enable them to gain entry into their chosen tertiary courses beyond their secondary schooling. I would like to congratulate our VCE team and our Pathways co-ordinators for all their hard work on behalf of our students.
Kind Regards
