Supporting and Celebrating Different Communities - Donating and Giving Back
Willy Kids know that other people matter. Our Junior School Councillors are always discussing how they can give back to the community and the meetings are alive with ideas. Over the years, the JSC have raised funds for numerous charities and organisations, and our Year 2 students have been supporting those in need at Christmas for a long time.
This term, the Junior School Council has chosen to support the Indigenous LIteracy Foundation by running The Great Book Swap on September 5th. This is a fantastic way to celebrate reading locally, learn more about Indigenous languages and culture, while raising funds for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. The idea is to swap a favourite book in exchange for a donation and this year, the foundation is aiming to raise $180,000! With this money, the foundation can gift 18,000 new, carefully chosen books to children in remote communities across the country.
The day before the book swap is Indigenous Literacy Day where the theme is ‘Be A Proud Voice for Country’. The school will be purchasing three beautiful new books to celebrate Country and classroom teachers are looking forward to sharing these with their students.
Interestingly, there are many wellbeing benefits to giving back and donating time and resources to our community.
Makes you happier
Giving to charities – whether monetary or donated goods is a mood booster. Helping those in need can make you feel more content and fulfilled. Research has shown that there is a link between making a donation to charity and feeling joy.
Strengthens personal values
Social Conscience is a widely given reason on why people donate to charities. When questioned, many individuals stated that they felt a moral duty to help others when they can. These personal values and principles were commonly found amongst individuals.
Introduces your children to the importance of generosity
Educating your children about donating teaches them about the importance of helping others. Sharing this experience from a young age can be valuable. It shows that they can make a positive impact in the world and that no amount of help is too small. Encouraging children to be generous can strengthen their attitudes towards helping others.
Inspires those around you to take part
Your actions can encourage those around you to take part and donate to charities too. Family giving strengthens relationships through a shared goal and raises more money collectively. Working with family and friends can increase the positive impact.
