Secondary Community News
Lower Secondary (Years 7-8)
The 7/8’s have had an exciting 2 weeks. Last week they went on an excursion to Science Works to learn about the changing states of matter. Students used their knowledge of Travel Training to make their way there by train.
In week 6 students have spent time doing different magic activities for Book Week. The 7/8s have been decorating their door with their favourite books and movies. Students have worked collaboratively to create wonderful resources to hopefully win a prize at the end of the week! As part of our book week celebrations the students got to watch a magic show and they were very impressed!
Upper Secondary (Years 9-10)
The 9-12 students recently had a blast at our Winter Formal! The Western theme was a hit, and the students thoroughly enjoyed dressing up. A special mention to Helena, Kat, and the entire team for their hard work. The event was a sight to behold, and the food was a hit. The students danced, indulged in snacks, socialized with their friends, grooved to the music, and had a great time at the photo booth! It was a night of pure joy and success for all!
Our school was buzzing with creativity during Book Week! The students had a blast using the green screen and decorating our door. Here are some of the fantastic designs crafted by the 9/10 Team. Congratulations to 9/10 B for being the overall school winner and getting a PIZZA PARTY!!
The 9/10s had a diverse range of excursions over the past two weeks. Some students went on a community walk and visited Sunshine Library. Others explored the city, visiting Queen Vic Market and Melbourne Central. The following week, we had a fascinating trip to Science Works and the Museum!
Senior Secondary (VPC/ASDAN)
Students have been working at full steam addressing ASDAN outcomes. Students have been choosing what they would like to grow, choosing a container in which to grow what they have chosen and planting seeds. On the practical side, during work experience, students continue to work enthusiastically at Westvale Community Centre and Sunshine Hospital.
BRITE INDUSTRIES-A BRIGHT PLACE TO BE
In Term 3 VPC students began structured work experience every Wednesday at Brite Industries in Broadmeadows, just down the road from another work experience provider, Enable. Brite industries is a large disability workplace, which means most of the workers have a variety of disabilities. Brite Industries has an excellent understanding of people with a great variety of disabilities and the best way of supporting and working with them.
Brite Industries offers a variety of work options within the workplace. So far, the students have worked on process line, packing shaving packs, glue, nail plates for builders, amongst other things. Students have also worked in the food packing, which required wearing no nail polish or jewellery and wearing masks, smocks and hair nets, and in the nursery, which is my favourite place to work, but sadly the students don’t share my enthusiasm to work there. Students are yet to work in the electric bike section, hopefully we do before the term finishes.
There is a great canteen at Brite Industries and some students really enjoy ordering lunch and playing Uno, sometimes with other workers, during our lunch breaks. Students enjoy talking to the other workers at Brite Industries and interact well with them, which the ES, Bess, and myself like to see. Brite industries have an excellent social/emotional structure embedded in its workplace culture. Disability Support Workers are on hand to support workers with disabilities and manage any challenges individual workers have. They organised a birthday cake for a worker on his birthday, have regular discos and other social activities and the Disability Support Workers have excellent and caring relationships with those workers with disabilities. The students really enjoy working at Brite Industries and management regularly comment on what good workers the students are. A big congratulations to all students for their hard work and positive attitude. Personally, I believe Brite Industries is an excellent option for parents/guardians and students to consider as a post school option as it offers a variety of work and a supportive, social and understanding workplace.
