FRENCH & WORLD CULTURES

T3 2024

This term we started our travel adventure in France where we learnt about the history of Bastille Day. Students enjoyed creating their own miniature tower after learning that the Eiffel Tower was built to celebrate the 100th year anniversary of the French Revolution/Bastille Day. We continued our visit to France with a virtual trip to Paris as we learnt about the 2024 Olympics, including the history of the mascots and their connection to the French Revolution.

Up next on our cultural learning experience was China. Students enjoyed learning about Chinese ribbon dancing, a traditional art form that originates in ancient China. Students practised some basic movements including 'the dragon', 'twisters and tornados' and 'over the moon' as well as creating some of their own. We then put our fine motor skills and persistence to the test learning how to use chopsticks with our playdough dumplings.

Our next passport stamp was for our visit to New Zealand where students learnt about the Māori culture, including the haka and some games used by warriors to develop hand eye coordination. Students enjoyed having a go at Tī Rākau and Whai string games (also known as cats cradle). Some students even learnt how to create the 'Eiffel Tower' with their string.
