Broadmeadows Athletics Carnival 2024
Determined - the quality of being determined; firmness of purpose.
The above definition is how I would describe every single athlete that represented School of the Good Shepherd at the recent Broadmeadows Athletics District Carnival held last Friday 23rd of August.
In 2024, SoGS took the largest contingent of Athletes since 2019 that allowed them to be represented in both Track and Field Events ranging from 100m, 200m, 800m, 1500m, 4x100m Relay, Discus, Shot Put,High Jump, Long Jump and Triple Jump respectively.
Each student was put through their paces, leading up to the final team selection. Once selected the students were notified and training began. Each lunchtime and recess these students were able to devote time to their craft and were able to improve ever so slightly each session on what they had learnt the previous session.
Carnival day had arrived and you could smell the nervousness and tension in the air. Each student eagerly awaited to board the bus along with staff. It is at this point I'd like to acknowledge the help and support from Ms Kelly, Mrs Peel, Ms Alison and Ms Kennedy. Without their support and guidance we would not have been able to support such a large team.
After a short but nervy bus trip down the M80, we had arrived. Our students hopped off the bus and we all made our way to our designated area for the day.
Our students warmed themselves up and delivered without disappointment! The students knowing that a 1st or 2nd place would guarantee a place in the next round's finals meant that they would have to give it their all in each and every event! Every student represented SoGS with dedication, passion and a desire to do their best.
Congratulations to the following students who progressed after finishing 1st or 2nd at the Broadmeadows District Carnival in their event.

Hooptime Basketball Competition Report – Wednesday, 4th September
On Wednesday, 4th September, a selected group of Grade 4, 5, and 6 students took to the courts for the highly anticipated Hooptime Basketball Competition at the Keilor Basketball and Netball Stadium. The day was filled with excitement, skillful play, and team spirit as our students showcased their basketball talents against other schools in a thrilling display of athleticism and sportsmanship.
Our teams were a diverse mix, featuring students with varying levels of experience—from seasoned Rep Players to rising Domestic champions. This combination of talent and enthusiasm made for some truly memorable games.
Team Highlights:
- Future Stars SoGS Stingrays: The youngest of our squads, composed of mostly grade 4 students, this team of fresh faced basketballers and with the help of Mel (Parent Helper) demonstrated incredible determination and growth throughout the day. Despite facing tough competition, they played with heart and showed great promise for the future.
- Future Stars SoGS Sharks: Our Sharks impressed everyone with their teamwork and communication on the court. Their ability to adapt to different opponents and stay focused under pressure was commendable. Losing the Semi Final to the eventual winners of the competition shows that the Sharks have a big future ahead of them.
- All Star Boys: The most experienced group, our All Star Boys were competitive throughout the day and by the last game of the group stage had gelled together and proved to be a force to be reckoned with. Under the guidance of Mr Cook, these boys created lasting memories that will be remembered for years to come.
- All Star Girls: Under the watchful and experienced eyes of Adrian (Parent Helper), the second most experienced team that represented SoGS - the All Star Girls did their very best and were also competitive throughout the day. The girls were able to challenge the opposition but unfortunately were not able to win through to the finals.
A massive thank you goes out to Mr. Cook, Mrs. Maria, and Ms. Lee for their unwavering support and organisation, ensuring that the day ran smoothly and that every student had a chance to shine.
Special recognition must be given to our amazing parent volunteers:
- Mel (Super Coach): Your guidance and coaching expertise were instrumental in our teams’ development. Thank you for inspiring the players and helping them build confidence towards the future!
- Adrian (Super Coach): Your strategic insights and encouragement were key to the team’s performance. The players enjoyed the day under your direction.
- Angela (Super Scorer): Keeping track of the action-packed games was no easy feat, and your precise scoring helped ensure everything was in order. We appreciate your dedication and attention to detail.
Overall, the Hooptime Basketball Competition was a resounding success, filled with memorable moments, personal bests, and the joy of playing basketball together as a team. Congratulations to all our players for their hard work and determination, and thank you to everyone who contributed to making this day such a wonderful experience.
We look forward to seeing our teams continue to grow and succeed in future competitions!
