Year Three - Spotlight on Learning

Dear Families,

A big thank you again to the dads, grand dads and father figures who were able to make it to our Father’s Day event on Thursday the 29th. The students were very eager to show them around the classroom as well as engage in games and other activities. Some beautiful photos below of some of these special moments.

This week is National Child Protection Week. The theme for 2024 is ‘EVERY CHILD IN EVERY COMMUNITY NEEDS A FAIR GO’. It is up to all Australians to play their part in promoting the safety and wellbeing of children and young people. The theme of ‘Every Child in every Community Needs a Fair Go’ goes hand in hand with the supplementary theme of ‘Every Conversation Matters.’ Conversations are powerful tools to keep children and young people safe and well. Conversations can help us understand issues, create solutions and build the social connections of children and young people.

Mathematics: This week we have been learning about strategies to use for Addition and Subtraction, such as pictorial representations like bar models and using the CUBES model to work out word problems. CUBES stands for - Circling the numbers - Underlining the question - Boxing the key words - Evaluate what steps are needed - Solve and check.

English: In writing, we have been reviewing persuasive texts and their features to plan and write a point of view on the topic “To Build or Not to Build on a Floodplain’.

Religious Education: We have been continuing our understanding of NEEDS and WANTS. Students looked at different photographs of children in varied settings, and discussed whether what they saw was a need or a want, and if those needs were the same for everyone.

Integrated Studies: In Integrated Studies this week we have been learning about the elements of Drama which included role & character, relationship, time & place, tension and focus & emphasis, giving examples of what these meant. This was then followed by playing some dramatic games including Emotional Telephone, Build a Story and Group Sculptures - aks your children to show you how to play these games, so you can join in as well.

Auslan: This week in Auslan we have been learning that a deaf or hearing person’s identity is shaped by the values of the people around them, the people they care about - their family. So students have been able to sign who is in their family, understanding what ‘identity’ means and sharing something that contributed to a deaf person’s identity.
