ACC Inclusive Athletics Carnival

On Friday 6 September, 14 students from Years 7-11 participated in the ACC Inclusive Athletics Carnival at McGillivray Reserve in Mount Claremont. The ACC organizes a number of inclusive carnivals throughout the year to provide students with additional needs the opportunity to represent their school in an inclusive environment that encourages maximum involvement.

JWACS students competed against peers from 12 other schools, showcasing excellent sportsmanship and resilience. It was a pleasure to witness the students engaging with peers from different schools and enthusiastically supporting their friends as they gave their best efforts.

A special congratulations to Jacob Larralde who placed first in the U/13 Division 1, 80m sprint.

The students are now eagerly anticipating the next inclusive event in Term 4, where we will participate in the Inclusive Ten-pin Bowling Carnival.

Inter-House Debating Final

The Inter-House Debating Final was held in Week 9, with the topic Nuclear power should be part of Australia’s green energy future. Scott House took the affirmative, with Charter House taking the negative. The quality of the debate was outstanding, in particular the research into each speaker's arguments. There was fierce rebuttal of the arguments presented, with Charter House ultimately taking the win. Congratulations to the Debating Teams for all Houses; it was a well-contested competition. Your teacher mentors should be proud of the effort your teams made this year. Thank you to Mr Morris, Mrs Evans, Mr Crawford and Ms Virgo for adjudicating the debates.

Years 9 and 10 Surf Safe Online Presentation

On Wednesday 4 September, our Years 9 and 10 students were privileged to listen to Mr Paul Litherland, owner of Surf Online Safe. Mr Litherland is an ex-WA Police Officer, with several years’ experience involved in the Technology Crime Investigation Unit. With his special skills Mr Litherland has turned his attention to educating our students to give them knowledge and insight into the dangers of the online world and what they can do to protect themselves.

Mr Litherland’s presentations are always engaging and eye-opening for our students, here’s what they had to say:

“My favourite part of the cyber safety presentation was that he could find 48 people on snapchat from our school and 2 TikToks. It showed that even though people might have their account on private with the right tools you still can hack into someone's account and find out their school, address and share photos that might not want to be shared. There was many different parts of the presentation that was interesting.”

Abi Miles, Year 7

“Paul Litherland’s presentation was both informative and engaging as he talked about the dangers of the online world. He told us several statistics about the usage of online platforms for 12-17 year-olds. Paul Litherland made us aware of the risks of social media such as Snapchat and Instagram in our day to day lives.”

Allie Sexton and April Teape, Year 8

“I found Paul's presentation very informative and engaging as well as shocking. He talked to the Years 9 and 10 students about how to keep our information private on social media, the rise of AI and real-life cases he has dealt with while working to protect youth online. After the session, I believe I am more informed about choices I make on social media and other online platforms as well as the protections I must put in place to keep myself safe in these spaces. Overall, I always find presentations from Paul helpful.”

Year 11 English ATAR Socratic Seminars

Year 11 English ATAR students participated in Seminars where students share and showcase their awareness of the conventions and features used in the works of Shaun Tan, artist, illustrator and writer.

Students shared their perspectives on the representation of the human experience and the physical and metaphorical journey depicted in each text. In this seminar, the inner circle presented their findings while the outer circle listened, took notes and built on these. The outer circle then presented their extension of these findings, in addition to their own.
