Melbourne Stars Visit

The Level 3-6 students were very excited to be part of the Melbourne Stars ‘Road Trip of regional Victoria’ initiative. Melbourne Stars general Manager, Blair Crouch, introduced ‘young guns’, Olivia Henry and Reiley Mark to the students. He described how at only 20 years of age Olivia is already a top order batswoman, and Reiley, a spin bowler, recently played his first game in Darwin which resulted in a notable 3/21(4).

The morning was divided into skills training and a Q&A session. Students were put through their paces developing batting and fielding skills, as well as teamwork and sportsmanship. Phillip Island Cricket Club has several players attending OLSS, and the Sharks would have been proud, as pre-season looks to be in full swing! The students then headed inside for a Q&A with Olivia and Reiley. Blair was extremely impressed with the depth of questions the students asked. Students pondered career pathways and the mental resilience required to bowl to Australia’s best. Olivia noted that mental wellbeing is extremely important in any sport, particularly cricket. Meanwhile Reiley described how training hard and ensuring that he does not dwell on failures but focuses on future success keeps his love of the game alive. Finally, both Stars players provided the OLSS students with sound advice;

“Believe in yourself”

“Be resilient”

“Set a goal, make a plan and stick to it!”
