Des passed away on 19 June. In 2020 he was inducted onto the St Virgil’s College Heritage Roll and the citation provided at the time is provided below.
Des’ father and two brothers attended the College and the passing of his brothers , Hugh and Terry, was recounted in the April 2023 edition of OVAtion.

Born 5 March 1933
Married Margaret (Kelly) from Queenstown - former St Mary’s College boarder (1962)
Two daughters: Mary Anne (a vet) and Susan (a double certificate nurse).
Nine grandchildren.
Career:
Left school early to work on family farm.
Had sheep, cattle and grew peas, poppies, potatoes etc on the NW
Coast at Howth.
Local Government
Became a member of the Penguin Municipal Council (1980)
Warden of Penguin Municipal Council for 3 years
When Penguin and Ulverstone amalgamated to form the
Central Coast Council, Des served a further five years
Tasmanian Government
Represented the Division of West Devon in the Legislative
Council 1995-99

- life membership (45 years holding many executive positions)
President Heybridge Improvement Association Inc (a position
held for 21 years)
Personal details:
As a young man loved all sports. Played football, cricket, tennis,
squash, badminton and snow skiing.
Was a member of the Penguin Surf Life Saving Club
Had over 30 years in the North West Offshore Cruising Club Inc
Life- long love of the water, fishing and boating
Served as a committee man and was Commodore for 3 years
Completed National Service at Brighton in 1953, won the heavyweight
boxing title in that camp
