What's happening in our learning spaces?

FOUNDATION NEWS

Last week culminated in our whole school performance of “Surfin USA” on Thursday, 7th August. Over multiple dance lessons in Terms 2 and 3, we have learnt a routine, guided by Miss Esther from “Dance Till You Drop”. We have shown great resilience by learning something new, collaboration by working together as a team and perseverance as we kept on trying even though sometimes it was tricky.

Lots of practising has occurred over the past few weeks to get our routine perfect. This was evident as we showcased our new skills during the two performances on Thursday night at 5:30 pm and 7 pm. We were a little nervous, because we had never performed in front of such a large audience. Mrs Marsico, Miss Sargent and Mrs Wenckowski are very proud of all of the Foundation students. Many thanks to the parents who helped to organise costumes.

Foundation LW welcomes Miss Elley Gravina from Australian Catholic University to their Learning Space,  as she completes her final teaching placement at St Fidelis.

This week, we will be learning about…

  • Numeracy: Continuing learning about Addition and learning addition strategies, such as counting on and counting all
  • Reading: Fiction-texts and their features
  • InitiaLit: Using learnt sounds to build, read and spell words and sentences, and read decodable story books (Learnt sounds: m, s, t, a, p, i, f, r, c, o, d, h, e, n, g, l, k, u, b, j)
  • Writing: Recording sounds, sight words, and using spaces, capital letters and full stops.
  • Inquiry: Tuning in to our Inquiry into Chemical Science
  • Religion: Feast of the Assumption
  • The Resilience Project: National Bullying Day

Here’s a reminder of some important upcoming dates to mark on your calendar:

YEAR 1/2

What an eventful week we have had in Year 1/2! There are so many exciting opportunities to learn new things and engage in fun experiences.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Dance Till You Drop concert on Thursday night! It was a fantastic evening and a huge success, made possible by the incredible support of our school community. We truly appreciate the effort and enthusiasm shown by all our families.

Each performance showcased a unique dance style and celebrated different cultures from around the world. We are so proud of our students for their creativity, confidence and teamwork on stage. It was a wonderful celebration of movement, music, and multiculturalism.

As readers and writers, we have been learning about sizzling starts, which are techniques used to engage the reader’s attention from the very first sentence. Our focus has been on onomatopoeia, words that mimic sounds such as bangcrash and whoosh! Students have been identifying examples of onomatopoeia in fiction texts and experimenting with using sound words to create engaging openings in their narrative writing. We are excited to see how these strategies help bring their stories to life!

As mathematicians, we have been describing and creating number patterns that increase or decrease by a constant amount. We have been learning to identify the rule in a number pattern, predict future numbers, and represent these patterns using number lines and tables.

Upcoming dates:

  • Book Week Dress Up Parade - Friday, 29th August
  • Father's Day Stall - Wednesday, 3rd September
  • Father's Day Breakfast Activities - Thursday, 4th September
  • School Closure Day - Friday, 5th September
  • End of Term 3 - Friday, 19th September

YEAR 3/4

As readers and writers, we have been exploring the book “Charlotte’s Web” by E.B White. We have been using our summarising skills to recap each chapter, and analysing each of the characters we encounter. We have been successful in identifying the personality traits, emotions, motivations, actions, and conflicts of Fern, Wilbur, Mr Arable, Mrs Arable, Avery, the Zuckermans, and Lurvy in the chapters we have read so far.

As inquirers, we have been tuning in to our new inquiry topic “Reactions: What’s the cause?” and have been exploring what a scientist looks like, what they do and the impacts they have had with their work. We have learnt about Steven Hawking, Marie Curie and Ada Twist to compare and contrast their scientific endeavours.

As dancers, last Thursday we performed at the Dance Concert to the song “Waka Waka” by Shakira. We did a fantastic job performing in front of our families and friends, and we had fun learning our dance from Miss Esther. Thank you for coming out to watch and support us!

A big thank you to Veronica, Asha, Tess and Ella for being a part of the choir on Sunday afternoon at the Year 6 Confirmation.

This week, we will be learning about…

  • Numeracy: Addition & Subtraction for Year 3. Multiplication & Division for Year 4.
  • Reading: Class novel on Charlotte’s Web.
  • Writing: Summarising and character analysis.
  • Spelling: The digraph /se/ making the sound "z" as in cheese.
  • Inquiry: Anti-bullying week and the Scientific Process.
  • Religion: Feast of the Assumption.

YEAR 5/6

It’s been another exciting week of learning, celebration, and hands-on exploration in our Year 5/6 space!

As inquirers, we explored chemical reactions by combining bicarbonate soda and vinegar. We made predictions, observed with curiosity, and discussed the reactions using scientific vocabulary. The room was filled with excitement as students saw their hypotheses come to life! We will continue our Science unit by exploring how materials and matter change over time through further investigations.

As mathematicians, we have now completed our unit on fractions and are beginning our final decimals unit of the year. This is a great time to revisit and practise times tables at home, as it will support student confidence and success across all areas of Maths.

As writers, we continued learning how to communicate scientific findings clearly through structured science reports. We focused on using language specific to science and linking our ideas logically.

As people of faith, we continue to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation. We are so proud of our Year 6 students who received the Sacrament over the weekend. Their reverence, leadership, and joy were beautiful to witness.

Congratulations to all students for their efforts during the concert rehearsals and preparation. Your dedication and teamwork have been fantastic to see. We’re so proud of you!

We’re proud of the way we’re growing as learners, performers, and people of faith. We look forward to another fantastic week ahead!
