Year Two Team News

with Steph, Joel and Rochelle

Hello Year Two families,

We are past the halfway mark of what has been an extremely busy and exciting term so far, yet there remains so much still to look forward to!

As we ‘wind up’ our oral presentations for the term, we would like to thank you for supporting your children with this task. Over the past few weeks it has been wonderful listening to the oral presentations about the ways different people’s families played in the past.

To further our understanding of our Inquiry Unit, we have also engaged in some ‘play based’ rotations, exploring a range of toys from the Melbourne Museum. We have learnt a lot about the ways play has changed, made some of our own toys from the past, and enjoyed playing with a range of old toys. In the coming weeks, we will be creating our own play experiences to extend our learning and creating a timeline of our favourite toys.

Important news:

  • Bring your favourite toy to school – We will be asking our Year Two students to bring a favourite toy to school next Tuesday 2nd September. Classroom teachers will be taking a photograph of the students’ favourite toys and the children will be creating a class toy timeline. During one of our Writing sessions, the students will be writing a brief description about their toys. An email will be sent via Compass on Monday, as a reminder.
  • Grade 2 Sleepover: Our Year 2 Sleepover will take place on Thursday 6th November (in Week 5 of Term 4). More information about the event will be provided closer to the date. If you have any questions about the sleepover, please contact your child’s classroom teacher.
  • Parent Helpers - Reading: If you are interested in helping to hear some students read on Tuesday or Thursday mornings, please add your name to our class schedules placed outside each of the classrooms. We would like to extend a big ‘Thank you’ to those who have already assisted with our reading program so far.
  • Hats required at school – Just a reminder, that students are required to wear a broad-brimmed hat in accordance with new guidelines. Please remind your child to pack their hat each day.

Curriculum Focus: Weeks 7 and 8

Literacy: In Reading, we will be focusing on making inferences to improve comprehension.

In Writing, we will be drafting and publishing a booklet for Father’s Day and we will be beginning to plan a narrative about a toy.

Numeracy:  We will be learning about two and three-dimensional shapes.

Inquiry: We will be continuing to learn about toys from the past and discussing how toys have changed over time. Using the things we have learnt so far this term, we will begin to create our own play experiences and a toy timeline.

Willy Kids: Through the pillar of Resilience, we will be learning about perseverance and how it helps us with both our learning at school and with many other aspects of our everyday lives.
