Visual Art

All grades are putting the finishing touches on their ‘Crazy Camel’ Art pieces. More information on the ordering process will happen in Term 4.

Grade Prep’s

After completing their Crazy Camel pieces, the Grade Preps are preparing some art pieces for the ‘Seaside Fair’. This week we looked at starfish and used dot painting with cotton buds to create some intricate patterns.

Grade 1’s

Most of the grade ones have completed their ‘Crazy Camel’ art pieces and have moved onto creating a piece for the Seaside fair.  We are using a wax resist technique to create this piece where we use white crayon and food dye to create an ‘under the sea’ picture.

Grade 2’s

The Grade 2’s have now moved onto some scratch art. We have prepared our A3 canvases and will spend the next session sketching our underwater scene. We will then transfer our design onto our paper by scratching away the paint revealing the colours underneath!

Grade 3/4’s

The Grade 3/4’s have begun a 3D beach scene using paint, airdry clay and magiclay. Last week we prepared the base and this week we will begin using Magiclay to make some of the details to our beach scene.

Grade 5/6’s

The Grade 5/6’s need a bit more time to finish their Crazy Camel pictures. Some students have begun designing their accordion 3D landscapes and are having fun with their designs. This will be quite detailed and will need a few weeks to complete.

Art Club

Art Club is a new activity which has started this year. Various year levels will have a turn to volunteer each term. The schedule for 2025 will be as follows:

Term 3

Term 4

Grade 1/2 - Seaside Fair Preparations

Grade Preps - Seaside Fair Preparations & Christmas

Art smocks

Just a reminder to bring in your Art smocks. Please hand them into your classroom teacher for storage. I recommend an old, oversized t-shirt or shirt with your child’s name on it.

Term 3 Drama

Preps

As the preps move into week 4 of term they are demonstrating their dramatic talents. Using an invisible magic box and miming an action, brushing your hair, putting on socks or getting dressed. Playing Mirror, Mirror and copying a partners movements, and using our face to express a wide range of emotions, while acting out a short scenario. It has created a lot of laughter and fun in the Performing Arts room.

Grade 1 & 2

Students have been using their imagination to create drama. They have used facial expressions, movement and the voice in warm up games and activities based around acting.

Grade 3 & 4

Students have continued playing warm up games that focus on quick thinking, reactions and concentration. They have communicated ideas using their face, body and voice when acting. They have started learning about the genre of melodrama and have acted out a scene including an “aside”. (This is a thought in a play that is intended to be heard by the audience but not by other characters). The focus was to add humour and timing to their scenes.

Grade 5 & 6

Students are continuing listening and responding to music selected by their peers at the start of each lesson. They have understood the importance of including gestures in their acting and have started activities based around developing characters.

Australian Girls Choir

It is that time of the year when the AGC run workshops in schools to work with and listen to girls sing and perform. They are scheduled to attend WPS on September 3rd, during a lunch time.

A flyer will be included in the Newsletter with a QR code. Girls need to register prior to the day using the QR Code. They cannot turn up on the day without parental permission. This will not be done through Compass, so the Office staff will not be able to admit your child, but they will  direct you to the Performing arts room . We will have the poster on the door. Any questions regarding the AGC, please contact Lynne Georgiadis , or the organisation listed on the flyer. We do have some students who are members of AGC here at WPS. it is a wonderful opportunity if your girl loves to sing.

Warm regards,

LOTE (French)

Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité

Now in week 4, students across year levels have shifted gear towards new linguisctic explorations.

Preps are learning about shapes in French and how to recognise French instructions involving shapes. For this, we are using ‘Les Formes’ song, a fun shape drawing activity and discovering T’Choupi – the cute little French cartoon character.

Year 1s and 2s are diving back into French numbers with abacus training, pairing up and identifying games, dice rolling activities and the creation of our own Jeu De L’Oie (Year 2s),

Year 3/4s are now investigating one aspect of France: La Statue De La Liberté. Given our fortnightly sessions this term, classes will have the liberty (no pun intended!!) to explore aspects of the topic with:

1. A timed 5 minute linguistic search in pairs to identify key words in French leading questions and share translations as a class

2. Decoding with a partner of French inquiry questions, re-using all linguistic clues

3. Investigation work on ipads to find answers to the French questions and dig out as many details as possible on the topic to extend on each question for class sharing and French book note-taking

Year 5/6s are learning to sing to the values of France’s ‘Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité’. For the purpose of a song analysis, they are working their way through the French lyrics to create a sound English understanding of its meaning. Meaning gives intention and intention gives better grasp of pronunciation, intonation and ultimately singing delivery. All students are enjoying practising those skills individually with their own headsets and working spaces to literally sing like no one is listening. What a joy for me to see our students liberating themselves by opening up to this freeing exercise of letting their French voices sing.

Physical Education

Fortnightly Curriculum Focus in Physical Education

We’re now well into our Term 3 PE units and it’s been fantastic to see students continuing to develop their skills and teamwork.

  • Prep: Continuing to explore fundamental movement skills through fun and engaging activities.
  • Year 1 & 2: Inventing and adapting their own games, building creativity and cooperation.
  • Grade 3/4: Progressing through the Target Games unit, focusing on improving accuracy and control in a variety of activities.
  • Grade 5/6: Developing strategies and teamwork in Tchoukball, an exciting invasion game that combines passing, movement, and tactical thinking.

Sports Update

On Wednesday, our school competed in the District Athletics Carnival. Every student represented Willy Primary with pride, giving their best effort in each event. We had some fantastic individual results and great displays of sportsmanship throughout the day. As a school, we finished 5th overall – a great achievement in a very competitive field. Congratulations to all our athletes for their hard work and determination!

Warm regards,

Paddy Gallivan
