Year 5/6 Team News

with Christina, Emma, Molly, Bianca I, Bianca R, Matt & Brittlee

Hello Year 5/6 families,

We are all starting to get excited about our Week 6 Camp!

A few reminders include:

  • Year 5 Camp (Mon-Wed)
  • Year 6 Camp (Wed-Fri)
  • Meet on the morning of camp outside the library (under the shade sail) at 8:45am for roll call.
  • Students will need a day pack with their lunch and drinkbottle for the first day.
  • Please double check the packing list. Toolangi is extremely cold this time of year (and often wet), so we encourage you to help your child be well prepared with additional warm and waterproof clothing.
  • Pillow and sleeping bag required (and labelled). If these can fit inside your bag/suitcase, we recommend doing so.
  • No tech devices of any kind allowed. No cosmetics or aerosols.
  • All medications (including any ‘in case of emergency’) needs to be handed in to staff in a clear zip-lock bag complete with dosage/permission form on the morning of departure. These forms have been given out to those who have indicated on their medical forms as well as sent home via email to all families. There will also be forms available on the morning of departure. Only personal asthma medication should be held by campers, all other medications must be handed into staff.
  • Should campers return early or late (Wednesday or Friday), communications will be communicated via compass. If we are on time, students will be ready for collection at 3:30pm on their arrival day.
  • Students are expected to be at school on the days in Week 6 when they are not at camp. We have planned to run an engaging program, complete with 2-3 sessions blocks per day dedicated to working on their Shark Tank projects.

What's coming up in the Classroom:

Literacy: During Weeks 5 & 6, we will begin looking at persuasive texts and media to support our inquiry project. Students are also working on taking a text of their own choosing through the writing process, aiming for publication by the end of the term.

Maths: To build on our work on Fractions, we are starting to work through problem solving tasks that link decimals and percentages to fractions. Any connections that can be made at home (eg cooking, shopping discounts, money) are encouraged. We also ask that students have the Google app Sheets installed. This is on the School App List for 2025 and will be used to complete a unit project for decimals, fractions and percentages.

Inquiry: We are now in our Grade 5 and Grade 6 groups, mapping out our ideas and distributing roles and responsibilties within our teams. During Week 6 we are will have multiple sessions to meet with our groups whilst each cohort is at camp.

Respectful Relationships: The next topic we address in this unit is foussed on gender-based violence. Students will explore data and types of violence that tend to occur between genders. We have had a mature response so far to our RR this term, and look forward to many more in depth discussions.

Willy Kids: During Weeks 5 and 6, Willy Kids Bounce Back. We will discuss strategies about how to pick ourselves up when faced with setbacks, with a special reference to camp.

Hosting Assembly:

  • Week 4  - 5/6M
  • Week 6 - Year 1 (as Yr6 on Camp)
  • Week 8 - 5/6S
  • Week 9 - Footy Day Assembly Hosted by ⅚ students

Student Voice- School Sport Update

At the Divisionals we won all our games they didn’t score any apart from Newport who scored 1 to 4. Determined, we won our first game 2, 0. It was challenging but we pushed through taking the next win 1, 0. And at the end of the day our hard and exhausting work finally paid of securing a first-place spot to Regional Finals. We want to thank our amazing coach Brittlee for helping us secure this win. We would also like to thank Mat Montebello for organising a well needed training session preparing us for regionals. We also thank Puhie for stepping up and helping the boys secure second place, also making through it to Regionals with us.

Lily J, 5/6H

Warm regards,
