Year 3/4 Team News

with Bec, Mary, Katja, Grace, Alison, Hayley & Steven

Hello Year  3/4 families,

This week we have been celebrating Book Week involving various whole school and class activities. The main aim of Book Week is to promote and celebrate children's literature, fostering a love of reading and encouraging children to explore the world of books. It also aims to enhance literacy skills, spark imagination and creativity, and develop a lifelong appreciation for reading. On Wednesday, we were entertained by Perform Education and their highly interactive show, Treasure Hunt. It was based on shortlisted books from the Children's Book Council of Australia awards 2025.

We look forward to seeing all the students dressed up as a book character for our parade tomorrow.

Year 3/4 Camp:

We look forward to heading off to Camp Adanac next week (Wed 20th – Fri 22nd August.). Please be across all the information regarding packing and times etc. Speak to your class teacher if you have any questions. We cross our fingers for favourable weather so we can make the most of all there is to offer.

Indigenous Dance Incursion. On Tuesday 19th of August, Williamstown Primary School will be hosting a powerful Indigenous Dance Incursion that brings First Nations culture to life. Aligned with the Australian Curriculum’s cross-curriculum priorities, this experience will deepen students' understanding of Aboriginal Histories and Cultures through traditional dance, storytelling, engaging discussion, and hands-on activities. There will be no student cost for this event, due to the amazing fundraising efforts undertaken by our Friends of Willy Parent group at last year’s trivia night. We are grateful for their ongoing support in creating enriching learning opportunities for our students.

Reminders-

  • From next Monday 18th August students are required to wear a wide rimmed school hat whilst outdoors.
  • Students are still required to bring a filled water bottle each day.
  • Please ensure that iPads from home are fully charged and brought to school every day.

Fortnightly Curriculum Focus:

Literacy: In Reading, we will be learning how to navigate a website using key features. We will be completing a character analysis of our class novel and discussing themes and events.

In Writing, we will continue to use 6+ traits to plan, write and publish a piece of writing. We will complete a recount of our camp experience.

Numeracy:  Fractions & Decimals. We are learning to understand how fractions relate to each other and can be represented using equal parts. We are learning to use a fraction wall to identify, compare, and match equivalent fractions. We are learning to place and compare fractions on a number line. We are learning to understand what a fraction is and how this can be represented in numerous ways. We are learning to link our fractional thinking to decimals and understand what a tenth and hundredth is.

Inquiry: For our Inquiry question is “What would life be like without laws and rules?”, we will be learning about the 3 levels of government, paying particular attention to local government and it’s roles and responsibilities.

Respectful relationships: Positive Gender Relationships. Using age-appropriate activities students will identify what the word ‘consent’ means, practise ways to ask for consent practise ways to refuse or withdraw consent and practise ways to respectfully accept when people refuse consent. For example, someone might say, ‘Did your parent consent for you to come on the school excursion?’ or ‘I didn’t give you consent to borrow my pens, so please give them back.’ Work as a class to build a definition of the word ‘consent’, supported by some examples. Students will use their understandings of respect and put this together with their understanding of personal space, body boundaries and consent.

Warm regards,

The Year 3/4 team – Rebecca Givogue & Mary Colangelo (3/4G), Katja Morris (3/4M), Grace Pante & Steven Puhar (3/4P), Alison Standish (3/4S) & Hayley Thibou (3/4T)
