Around Our Level
Welcome back to Miss Kayla Pratt, who is completing her final teaching placement in Prep B over the next four weeks. We wish her all the very best as she prepares for a future career in teaching.
This week in Prep we have been learning about the sounds that ‘qu', 'v', 'x', and 'z' make. We have now completed all of the letters of the alphabet, which is a fantastic achievement. We will continue to revise and learn more about the short vowel sounds and introduce the children to important diagraphs. Our Prep students are working through their personal list of ‘heart words’ at home as part of their weekly homework. We are regularly testing these by sight, and once they can read these words, the next step is to practise writing these ('I', 'a', 'said', 'the', 'to', 'from', 'do', 'of', 'into', 'are', 'have', 'was' and 'what').
In Writing, we have been learning to create a list poem. This week the students have published a list poem titled ‘Ouch’, ‘I’m Tired’, and ‘Rain’. The children brainstormed their ideas as a class and used the poetry template to complete their final draft to be displayed in the classroom.
In Maths, we have been learning about number lines and addition. Miss Pratt has been planning and taking some fun and engaging lessons. The children have been using the number line to start at a given number and jump ahead on the number line. The focus has initially been on numbers to 10 using the vocabulary of ‘before', 'after', 'equal', 'add', 'more', 'altogether', 'plus', and 'addition’. If I start on the number 3 and move 4 places. What number will I land on? 3 + 4 = 7
For our Applied Maths on a Wednesday, we have been learning about ‘mass’ and comparing objects that are heavy and light. We even got to compare our shoes with other objects in the classroom.
In Geography, we have been learning about special places, such as our bedroom, cubbyhouse, park, friend’s house, or favourite holiday spot.
Upcoming events include dressing up as your favourite Book Week Character, Book Week Parade and assembly, and a special ‘Book Tasting’ experience in the Junior classrooms.
