Victorian Premiers Reading Challenge

Here at Yarra Road, 5,224 books have been read and entered online. 122 students have completed the Reading Challenge, which is just under half of the school. All students in Prep A, Prep B, and 1B have finished. A special mention goes to Year 5/6C, who have nearly completed the Challenge. Keep reading - you have 3 weeks left!

The following students have read and entered a lot of books online. They will each get a certificate at assembly on Monday.

  • Zac W (Year 1) has read 43 books

  • Mei H (Year 2) has read 75 books

  • Amelia W (Year 3) has read 52 books

  • Taylor A (Year 4) has read 77 books

  • Will L (Year 5) has read 29 books

Each student has a unique username and password, and may add all the books they have read this year online. If they don’t have their details, please contact your child’s classroom teacher or hazel.vanloenen@education.vic.gov.au

Students from Prep to Year 2 need to read, or share in class, 30 books (20 of them being Challenge Books). Years 3 to 6 need to read 15 books (10 of them being Challenge books).

3 more weeks to go!

Book Week is just around the corner - and we can’t wait for Monday’s Book Character Dress-up Day assembly! Remember - there is no need for expensive outfits - you are bound to have a dress-up or sports outfit that will match one of your kid’s favourite books. Have a look on Pinterest or Google images if you are stuck for ideas! Mrs Smith has some spare dress-ups in the Performing Arts room, and our Literacy coordinator also has some dress-ups for those students who are really stuck or who forget on the day! It would be great if the students could bring the book that matches their costume.

Each class is going to have a ‘Book Tasting’ during the week. The classrooms will be set up like restaurants. The students will sample books of different genres, and discuss their favourites.

The teachers will share their favourite books, and we will read some of the Children’s Book Council of Australia’s shortlisted books. Many classes vote for their favourite book in each category. Years 1 and 2 have already read the books in the Picture Book category and are now starting on the Early Childhood books.

Happy reading everyone!
