Girl Power - Engineering

Over the school holidays, I was thrilled to attend The University of Melbourne’s Girl Power in Engineering and IT Camp at their Parkville campus. Established in 2018, the program encourages girls to explore careers in Engineering and IT, and spans from Year 9 to Year 12.
The application process began with questions about my passion for engineering, extracurricular involvement, and a recommendation from my science teacher.
After a successful interview where I collaborated with three other applicants to design a device addressing a UN Sustainable Development Goal, I was excited to receive my acceptance in May.
The program starts with the camp, held at University College, and continues into Year 10 with work experience in the Faculty of Science.
Each year, about 3,000 students apply for this work experience, but only 90 are selected, making it a special opportunity. In Years 11 and 12, participants are paired with current UniMelb students who provide support through VCE and university preparation.
During the four-day camp, we enjoyed a range of activities, including:
- A design thinking workshop
- Python coding with RoboGals
- Bridge building with a university professor
- Exploring The Creator Space
- Building offshore windmill models with Students in Renewable Energy (SiRE)
- Drone challenges at the Science Gallery
- Lunch with the Melbourne University Motor Racing Team
- A careers evening
This camp has given me a wealth of new experiences, skills, friendships, insights and more! I look forward to sharing my experience and encouraging next year’s Year 9 cohort to apply!
