Melbourne Museum Excursion

Last Thursday, our Foundation to Year 2 students had the incredible opportunity to visit the Melbourne Museum for a full day of hands-on exploration and learning. It was an early start, with excited faces arriving before sunrise for our 7:00am departure. The students explored a range of fascinating exhibits that supported our learning in Science and Humanities.

Highlights of the day included standing face-to-face with the life-sized Triceratops: Fate of the Dinosaurs display, marvelling at the creatures in Bugs Alive!, learning about the history and culture of the First Peoples, and journeying back in time through the 600 Million Years exhibit. We were also able to participate in a special educational session led by an expert in bugs and insects. Students were captivated as they learnt about different types of insects, their body parts, life cycles, and fascinating adaptations. Using magnifying glasses, students closely inspected real insect specimens, observing details they had never noticed before. The session brought our learning to life in a fun, hands-on and highly engaging way. Throughout the day, the museum was filled with the sound of excited voices—we were constantly hearing “WOW!”, “Have a look at this!” and “Check this out!” as students engaged with the incredible displays. Their curiosity and wonder were on full display, making it a truly magical learning experience. The students were enthusiastic, curious, and beautifully behaved throughout the day. It was wonderful to see their eyes light up as they connected what they saw with what we’ve been learning in class.

A big thank you to the staff who joined us for the day, and to our families for the early drop-offs and support. It was a big day—but one full of unforgettable moments and rich learning experiences!

Fun Ways to Boost Literacy & Numeracy at Home

Often parents are after ideas to supplement learning at home. It is great for students to practice and apply what they have learnt at school in real life settings.

Learning at home doesn’t have to feel like homework! Try these quick and easy ideas to keep brains buzzing:

  • Story Time Adventures – Read together and swap who gets to be the storyteller. Add silly voices to make it fun!
  • Maths in the Kitchen – Let your child measure ingredients, double a recipe, or set the table with the right number of plates.
  • Word Hunts – Pick a word of the day and see how many times you can spot it in books, signs, or even on TV.
  • Money Matters – When shopping, ask your child to help add up the total or work out the change.
  • Car Trip Challenges – Play “Number I Spy” with licence plates or road signs, or practise times tables out loud.
  • Online Learning Fun –
    • Explore ABC Education for games, videos and activities.
    • Try Reading Eggs for engaging reading practice.
    • Use Maths Online or Coolmath4Kids for quick daily practice.

Little moments of fun — in the kitchen, car, or online — can add up to big learning wins!
