From South Africa to Strathfield: Embracing Ubuntu in Leadership
My name is Jodie Connor, and I’m honoured to be stepping in as Acting Deputy Principal while Dr Lavorato is on leave. When I’m not at St Patrick’s, I serve as Deputy Principal at St Edward’s College, Gosford. It’s a privilege to work across both communities, and I’m truly grateful for the warmth and welcome I’ve already received from everyone here at St Patrick’s.
One of the things I value most about our school is our deep connection to the Edmund Rice Education Australia (EREA) family. Being part of this community means we are united by values that reach far beyond our own gates—values such as compassion, justice, and a profound respect for the dignity of every person. These principles are lived out daily in our classrooms, playgrounds, and wider community, and they are what make our school such a special place.
Earlier this year, I had the incredible opportunity to travel to South Africa for the Edmund Rice Education Beyond Borders (EREBB) Leadership Symposium. There, I met Deputy Principals and Principals from around the globe who share not only our formation vision, but also a deep commitment to nurturing young people as compassionate, courageous leaders. It was inspiring to see how our shared values connect us, no matter where we come from.
While in South Africa, I was introduced to the powerful African philosophy of ‘Ubuntu’—the idea that “I am because we are.” Ubuntu speaks to the heart of community: our humanity is bound up in one another, and we are all enriched when we recognise the value and dignity in each person.
This experience reminded me that true leadership begins with seeing God in everyone we meet. Whether in the classroom, the playground, or the staffroom, I believe we are called to look for the goodness and potential in each other, and to help one another grow.
I am excited to bring this spirit of Ubuntu into my work here, and I look forward to learning from each of you—students, staff, and families alike. My door is always open, and I hope you’ll feel free to reach out, share your ideas, or simply say hello.
