In preparation for their Valedictory Dinner, our Year 12 students have commenced the graceful practice of the waltz, accompanied by their mothers and significant female figures. Under the expert guidance of the Long Steps Dancing Team, these rehearsals have been imbued with a spirit of joy, connection, and tradition. Beyond the refinement of dance steps, the experience has offered a profound opportunity to honour the enduring bonds between students and their families. As this milestone occasion draws near, the waltz rehearsals stand as a poignant symbol of gratitude, unity, and celebration, marking the beginning of cherished memories that will last a lifetime.
On Wednesday 3 September, our Pathways students had the privilege of engaging with Hart Cultural Connections, a program dedicated to immersing young people in Aboriginal culture, knowledge, and traditions. Through hands-on workshops in dance, cooking, storytelling, and traditional crafts, students were given the opportunity to learn about the deep connections between culture, land, and community.
These experiences form an important part of our Pathways program, helping students build respect for Indigenous perspectives while fostering a stronger sense of belonging and identity. By walking alongside cultural leaders and engaging directly in practices that connect them to Country, students gain not only valuable skills but also a deeper appreciation for the richness of Aboriginal culture.
At St Virgil’s, we are grateful for the ongoing partnership with Djuker and his team from Hart Cultural Connections, ensuring our students continue to grow in cultural understanding and connection.
On Tuesday 9 September, our Year 9 students will have the privilege of meeting with nine members of our Old Virgilians Association to take part in a special panel discussion on what it means to be a man of St Virgil’s.
In preparation, the boys have been exploring the biographies of these Old Virgilians and have carefully developed questions to guide the conversations on the day. Through these interactions, our students will gain a deeper appreciation of the values, resilience, and achievements that have shaped generations of Virgilian men.
The bond between our College and the Old Virgilians Association is something we treasure deeply. It is through these shared stories and connections that our young men come to see themselves as part of a much greater journey—one that extends well beyond their school years. This tradition of mentorship and storytelling enriches our community and ensures that the spirit of St Virgil’s continues to thrive from one generation to the next.
We are sincerely grateful to the Old Virgilians who have so generously given their time to inspire and guide our students. Their continued presence reminds us that to be a Virgilian is not just about the years spent at the College, but about belonging to a lifelong brotherhood that continues to support, uplift, and shape the lives of our young men.
We thank Matthew Zukauskas, Liam Donaghy, Andrew Harrison, Ryan Boorsboom, Ben Morgan, Chris Wright and Hudson Arckley for their volunteering of time to share their experiences of SVC.
We extend our gratitude to the students and teachers in 8A and 8B for the respectful and thoughtful manner in which they participated in our recent Learning Group Masses. These celebrations provide an important opportunity for our young men to engage more deeply with the College’s identity and mission, and it is through the pastoral guidance of Father Suresh that these experiences are enriched. Father Suresh has established a strong and enduring connection with the St Virgil’s College community, offering wisdom, encouragement, and a genuine presence that resonates with our students. His leadership not only enhances the liturgical life of the College but also strengthens the spiritual formation of our young men, inspiring them to live with faith, compassion, and integrity.
I am wanting to update you regarding our Year 9 Service Day on Monday 22 September.
The College had originally selected Monday for our students to attend multiple locations around Hobart to provide Service as part of their Religious Education classes.
Unfortunately, due to accessibility and timing, we have had to reschedule this Service Day into Mid-Term 4. We are currently working with our providers to update and lock in the date. We do apologise for any changes in the plan.
