Connect: Year 5

Welcome to Term Four.
We hope you had an enjoyable holiday. Looking forward to continuing the Grade Five journey. This term we will continue working with decimals, percentages and fractions in Maths. Delve into Knowledge Rich Curriculum, exploring how Australia was settled in Literacy. Read Tom Appleby Convict Boy as our class novel, continue 5/6 Sport lessons and practice our questioning and predicting skills in Inquiry while we explore solids, liquids and gases.

5A and 5B will have Kitchen Garden this term.
Literacy
During Literacy lesson the students with explore how Australia was settled by the British. They will summarise and compare and contrast how the colonies of New South Wales, Tasmania and Western Australia were settled. Tom Appleby by Jackie French is our class novel and this also explores the life of a convict sentenced to deportation to Botany Bay for stealing. Students will develop their writing skills by writing a series of diary entries from the perspective of a convict.
Maths
Converting between decimals, percentages and fractions will be our focus for the coming weeks. Students will also explore measurement, selecting units of measure for length and mass using a variety of measuring tolls.
Wellbeing
During our Wellbeing lessons students will explore positive and negative use of power in relationships, what it means to be a bystander and help seeking. They will develop strategies to succeed when learning is challenging and how to overcome speed humps.
