Upcoming Learning

Literacy

In phonics, we will continue Stage 7.5, focusing on the morphology of words. Students will learn to read and spell words with the suffix -ure, including those ending in -ture (pronounced “chuh” as in picture), and understand how this suffix changes the meaning of base words. They will also work on words with the suffix -tion(pronounced “shun” as in action), learning to read, spell, and understand how this suffix affects word meaning.

This term, we are exploring the amazing world of trees through The Gentle Genius of Trees by Phillip Bunting and other informative texts. Students are learning how trees grow, survive through photosynthesis, and communicate by sharing water, food, and

information. We’re also discovering how forests function like communities and why trees are so important for the health of our planet.

In writing, students are continuing to develop their paragraph-level skills by planning, writing, and publishing an informative explanation text in the form of a poster, using the Single-Paragraph Outline structure of a topic sentence, supporting details, and a concluding sentence.

Numeracy

In Number we will be starting our Operations unit. Students will learn to solve addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division word problems using bar models and will be introduced to the CUBES strategy to break down worded problems by circling key numbers, underling the question, box key words, evaluate the steps needed and solving the question.

In our Applied unit investigating Shape, students will learn to name, identify, and describe two-dimensional shapes by counting their sides and vertices. They will also explore how to identify parallel sides and sort shapes into regular and irregular categories.

Inquiry - Through Generations

This term, students are exploring how people, places, and stories are connected across time in our Inquiry unit Through Generations. They will interview someone from an older generation to learn about the past and practise using language to describe events in the past, present, and future. Students will also explore different points of view, the importance of special places in communities and cultures, and how stories from the past can be told in different ways.

Wellbeing

In Wellbeing, students will explore the topic of Help Seeking. They will learn to identify and list people they can go to for help, such as family members, coaches, teachers, or other trusted adults. They will also reflect on who they support in return, helping them understand the importance of both seeking help when needed and offering help to others.

A Celebration of Learning

The Grade 2 students created beautiful tree artworks inspired by The Gentle Genius of Trees by Phillip Bunting. Using a vibrant mix of paper collage, watercolours, pencil, and oil pastels or crayons, they explored different textures and colours to bring their unique trees to life.
