Connect: Year 1

Hello families, here we are in Term 4. Where does the time go? This is a long term with lots of fun events such as the Art Show and the Community Picnic.
For the Art Show the Grade Ones will be running a tattoo stall and helping take the money for the balloonist. We are looking for parent helpers to take a 30-minute shift on the night. Please let your child's class teacher know if you are available. You will need a valid Working with Children's Check.
Students have settled back into school life, and we have been hearing many exciting stories about their holiday break.

LITERACY
Our phonics focus in the next two weeks will be the sound 'yoo'. The students will learn the different ways this phoneme can be represented. They will practise reading words, phrases and sentences. They will build to reading a decodable text with increasing fluency. As always practising with Little Learner books at home is fantastic reinforcement.
For writing we have been reading Migaloo -The White Whale. The students have been recording their thinking and looking at the narrative structufre which includes, characters, setting, actions, problems and the solution. They really enjoy learning about whales and facts about them.
NUMERACY
We have been learning addition and subtractions strategies such as using a number line, finding the difference between numbers and solving calculations with missing numbers.
The students continue to take part in a daily review to ensure they keep practising skills from previous weeks. They have blown us away with their confidence and increasing enjoyment in Maths. A way to support at home is to practise their friends of ten. This video will show you what they are.

INQUIRY
Our focus is on Sound and Light. The students will spend the term identifying sources of sound and light. They will learn the difference between natural sources and man-made. The students will also get to make and play their own musical instruments.
WELLBEING
We are focusing on help seeking strategies when a problem arises. We have been talking about the different types of problems they may face at home and at school and who they should ask for help. This is a great discussion to have at home, for example 'Who would you ask for help if you got lost in the supermarket?'
