Coil pots
Coil pots have a long history as one of the oldest ways to make pottery, created by stacking and joining clay coils to build containers for storing food and water.
This hand-building technique predates the potter's wheel and was used by ancient cultures worldwide, including in Central Mexico, the American Southwest, and Africa. The Grade 5 and 6 students learnt to connect with this ancient art form, using similar methods to those used by people thousands of years ago.
The students first learnt how to make a variety of coil shapes:
Once they were confident with rolling coils, they rolled out a slab of clay and cut a circle piece to form the base of the pot. Two long coils were joined first to provide stability for the pot using the 4 S’s – Score, Slip, Stick and Smooth.
The students then started to join other types of coils of their choosing such as arches, spirals and braid, ensuring they were smoothed on the inside of the pot to prevent breakages.
Once dried and fired, the pots were dipped in Indian Ink which would enable all the little crevices to be filled in, then painted in metallic paint colours of bronze, silver or gold.
