Year 11 Chemistry

Titration Competition 2025

The annual Royal Australian Chemical Institute Titration Competition provides an exceptional opportunity for Secondary School students to extend their knowledge and refine their practical skills in Chemistry. Designed to cultivate precision, problem-solving, and perseverance, the competition enables participants to engage in authentic laboratory work, often within a university setting, and fosters a genuine appreciation for the discipline of Chemistry.

On Tuesday 9 September, four groups of dedicated Year 11 Chemistry students proudly represented our College in this challenging and rewarding competition. Each participant was required to complete two rounds of acid–base titrations in order to determine the concentration of an unknown weak acid. Prior to this, students standardised a sodium hydroxide solution using a provided standard acid, a critical step ensuring the accuracy of their subsequent calculations. Such tasks demanded not only technical skill but also careful attention to detail and the ability to work calmly under pressure.

The competition was further enriched by the tireless support of our laboratory technician, Mrs Wendy Oh, who ensured the smooth preparation and supply of all necessary equipment and reagents. Following weeks of practice, the students approached the event with enthusiasm and confidence, demonstrating persistence, teamwork, and a genuine eagerness to apply their learning. Their ability to generate concordant results reflected both their growing expertise and their commitment to excellence.

Teams were assessed on the accuracy of their results, with rankings determined by how closely their calculated concentrations aligned with the actual values. Beyond the competitive element, however, the experience proved invaluable in deepening students’ understanding of volumetric analysis and in reinforcing the importance of precision in scientific work.

We commend our Year 11 participants for their dedication and effort, and we celebrate their willingness to embrace this academic challenge. Their participation not only enhanced their practical skills but also demonstrated resilience, collaboration, and an enduring passion for learning. As we await the announcement of results, we take pride in their achievements and the way they represented our school community with diligence and enthusiasm.
