FOUNDATION NEWS
It has been another very busy week in Foundation, and lots of exciting things have been happening!
As scientists, we’ve been continuing to investigate how things change and behave, using the scientific method to ask questions, make predictions, test ideas, observe results, and share our findings. This week’s highlight was an experiment called ‘Invisible Ink’. We dipped cotton buds into lemon juice and used them to draw or write on paper- at first, we could barely see anything! Then, using a hair dryer, we applied heat and closely observed what happened. As thinkers, we predicted what might occur- would our drawings disappear, change colour, or spread apart? To our amazement, the heat caused the lemon juice to burn slightly, turning it a darker colour and revealing our hidden messages, words and designs! We discovered it worked even better on dark paper or when using a hotter heat source like an iron or sandwich press. It was a super fascinating experiment for all of us!
After this, as writers, we created a procedural text for the experiment. We learned that procedures tell us how to do or make something. We had to include the title, list the materials needed and record each of the steps in order. We also used action words, also known as verbs. We were proud of how clearly we could explain the process!
Now, we’re all looking forward to our much-anticipated Science Day this Wednesday, where we’ll be exploring materials and their properties, combining different substances to see what happens, and investigating different forces at work!
If you are interested in volunteering your time for one or more of these sessions, please put your name down on the timetable on the door outside FLW, or email one of us!
Thursday was a very special morning at St Fidelis, as we celebrated Father’s Day with many of the wonderful men in our lives. The day began with a yummy breakfast in the hall, where we shared croissants and egg-and-bacon rolls with our Dads, grandfathers and other special guests. After breakfast, we invited them into our learning spaces to engage in a range of fun activities. We made Father’s Day crowns, drew portraits of our Dads, completed word searches with their names and wrote acrostic poems. We also gave them the very special gifts and cards we had been working on throughout the week! To finish the morning, we returned to the hall for a touching assembly honouring our fathers. It was a joyful and memorable celebration, and we hope all of the Dads in our community had a truly wonderful Father’s Day!
A big thank you to the Spyrou family, owners of Village Bakery, and the Parents and Friends for organising and preparing our delicious breakfast orders!
This week, we will be learning about…
- Numeracy: Subtraction
- Reading: Non-fiction texts and their features
- InitiaLit: Using learnt sounds to build, read and spell words and sentences, and read decodable story books (Learnt sounds: m, s, t, a, p, i, f, r, c, o, d, h, e, n, g, l, k, u, b, j, w, ck, ss, ll, ff)
- Writing: Writing procedural texts and using verbs in our writing
- Inquiry: Science Day- properties of materials, forces, weather, mixing materials
- Religion: St Carlo Acutis
- The Resilience Project: Empathy
A friendly reminder about the following dates…
- Hot Food Day- Wednesday, 17th September
- End of Term (1 pm finish)- Friday, 19th September
Have a wonderful week!

YEAR 1/2 NEWS
There is never a dull moment in Year 1/2! Our classrooms have been filled with energy, curiosity and creativity as the children continue to grow as learners. From celebrating special events with our families, to exploring the world around us in Inquiry, and building new skills in Mathematics, Reading and Writing, the students have been busy engaging in a wide range of exciting learning experiences.
We want to thank all the dads and father figures who joined us for our Father’s Day breakfast, activities and assembly. It was such a special morning filled with laughter, joy and connection. The children loved sharing this time with you, whether it was playing games, enjoying a delicious breakfast together, or proudly showing off their classrooms and work. We hope you enjoyed the chance to celebrate the important role you play in their lives.
As inquirers, the students have been investigating the many changes that take place on Earth. We have begun by looking at the four seasons and identifying the unique characteristics of summer, autumn, winter and spring. Students have been encouraged to make comparisons and record their observations in creative and thoughtful ways. There have been many interesting discussions as children shared their personal experiences of each season, from summer holidays at the beach to chilly winter mornings. We are excited to continue building on this curiosity as we explore the different ways our world changes over time.
As mathematicians, we have been diving deeper into the concept of division. The children are learning that there are many different ways to solve division problems, such as using skip counting, doubling and halving, and drawing on their knowledge of multiplication facts. We have been encouraging students to explain their thinking, share their strategies and try more than one method when solving a problem. This week, we are focusing on arrays as a way of representing division. The children are beginning to see how division connects with multiplication, which is helping to strengthen their number sense and confidence as mathematicians.
This week, we will be learning about…
- Numeracy: Division
- Reading: Visualisation
- Writing: Narrative Planning and Writing
- Spelling: The digraph /ir/ making the sound “er” as in shirt.
- Inquiry: Changes on Earth
- Religion: Jubilee Year of Hope

YEAR 3/4 NEWS
As readers and writers, we are learning to create mental images from a text we read, view or hear and describe this image by drawing it. With support from our class novel, Charlotte’s Web, we have been visualising different scenes from the book and comparing these scenes with our peers. It has been interesting to see how different our visualisations are!
As scientists, we have been learning about states of matter and chemical reactions by engaging in experiments, following the scientific method as we go. Through the process of making jelly, we explored how the ingredients went through the different states of matter and built our skills in collecting observational data. Using the magic of chemical reactions, we managed to inflate a balloon without blowing into it - just using vinegar and bicarbonate of soda. If any parent helpers would love to run their own scientific experiment in class, please get in touch with your child’s teacher.
As a school community, we celebrated Father’s Day with a special breakfast and classroom activities. Thank you to all the special males for attending.
This week, we will be learning about…
- Numeracy: Time (Year 3) & Decimals (Year 4)
- Reading: Class novel on Charlotte’s Web
- Writing: Character Analysis
- Spelling: The suffix -less
- Inquiry: Science experiments using the scientific method
- Religion: Jubilee year of hope

YEAR 5/6 NEWS
It was lovely to have so many fathers in the SLA participating in the hands-on activity with us. Congratulations to all the fathers and children for creating some magnificent towers with spaghetti and marshmallows; they were very tall!
As Inquirers, we had an incursion from Hands-on Science where we explored science concepts like chemical reactions. As part of this, we explored the properties and behaviours of chemicals and materials and explored the reversible and irreversible changes that occur when chemicals are mixed.
On Wednesday, we participated in the AFL in Schools webinar. We learned how to make active, healthy and safe choices and discovered the importance of good nutrition for our well-being. We also picked up some fun footy tips to boost our game. We even got to hear from the Western Bulldogs star Cody Weightman!
Have a wonderful week!
