Gifted & Talented

As each has received a gift, employ it for one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace. (Peter, 4:10)

At Mazenod, we believe every student reflects the image of God—uniquely gifted with purpose and potential. Our Enhancement Program is one way we live out that belief, offering opportunities that celebrate individual strengths while encouraging students to contribute meaningfully to the world around them.

Guided by the Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools (MACS) Framework for Gifted Education, the program supports students’ academic, spiritual, and personal growth. We draw on Dr. François Gagné’s Differentiated Model of Giftedness and Talent, which sees giftedness as natural ability and talent as something developed through support and meaningful learning experiences.

In the junior years, selected students take part in weekly enrichment classes in subjects including English, Mathematics, History, Religion, Music, and STEM. These small groups bring together students with similar interests and curiosity, creating a space where learning feels more like exploration than routine. “I like that it’s a small class,” says a Year 8 student. “You can really get into topics that interest you and try different ways of thinking and doing things. It’s about learning how to think in new ways, which I really enjoy.”

In the senior years, the Enhancement Program offers accelerated and extended pathways. Some students take on VCE subjects earlier than usual, while others even begin university-level study during their final years—experiences that provide meaningful stretch and prepare them for what lies ahead.

Students tell us that the program is not only rewarding but genuinely fun. They enjoy the chance to think more deeply and work alongside peers who share their enthusiasm. That energy and engagement ripple out into the broader school culture, helping to keep young minds switched on and curious. In many ways, it helps underpin the College’s strong academic performance by supporting students to stay motivated and connected to their learning.

We’re proud of the culture of inclusion that makes this program possible and we’re particularly grateful to the staff who bring it to life - teachers who notice potential, provide challenge, and support each student to grow into the fullness of their gifts.
