Year 5/6 News

Learning Centre Four
It’s hard to believe we’re already in Week 6 of Term 2! Time is flying in Learning Centre 4, and it’s been a busy and productive few weeks for our Year 5 and 6 students. This term, students have already had the opportunity to extend their learning beyond the classroom with some fantastic excursions. The Year 5s visited MacKillop College to watch their dress rehersal for Chicago- Teen Edition, some of the 5s ad 6s explored Kids News and produced their own segment at ACMI, and some Year 6s have already taken part in an exciting STEM-based excursion at The Huddle in North Melbourne. We’re so proud of the growth we’re seeing and look forward to what the rest of the term will bring!

Mackillop College Musical - Chicago
This week saw our Year 5s attend MacKillop College’s final dress rehearsal for their upcoming musical ‘Chicago- Teen Edition'. Students started the day with a tour of MacKillop, then a muffin and a piece of fruit. They were invited into the theatre and everyone was very excited to see the stage, orchestra pit and all the lights. Students behaved well and enjoyed the experience.
Year 5
Literacy: During literacy last week, students participated in National Simultaneous Storytime. We read ‘Truck Cat’ . We explored the story and came up with an alternative plot. This week was commemorated with Sorry Day. We watched the speech Kevin Rudd presented and reflected on what impact that has had moving forward. Students were able to then reflect on what it would have been like to be taken away from their families.
Numeracy:Place value and decimals were the focus for this fortnight. Students used partitioning numbers, ten grids, number line, hundredths grid and decimats to show the value of numbers.
Inquiry: During Inquiry, we explored news reports. We then read about the new elephant enclosure at Werribee Open Range Zoo and wrote our own report about it, including elements to make it entertaining to the audience while keeping it clear, concise and correct.
Religion: In Religion, we completed our study about other religions and discussed what we had learnt to the group. This week we began developing our understanding of the 7 sacraments and their importance by describing what we saw in images that represent each sacrament.
Wellbeing: Students explored coping strategies. Students came up with ideas from each of the following groups, energetic activity, self-calming activity, social activity, shifting attention and getting organised to develop their own coping strategies.
Year 6
Literacy: We celebrated the milestone of the 25th Anniversary of National Simultaneous Storytime, with the fictional narrative “The Truck Cat”. Students identified the themes of immigration, home, and feeling like the outsider, making connections to their own lives. Students remembered the Stolen Generations as part of National Sorry Day, as well as the apology by then Prime Minister Keven Rudd. They listened to the stories of the Stolen Generations and reflected on how they would feel if you were taken from your family, never to see them again.
Maths: Students learned to compare and order numbers up to three decimal places, renaming tenths as hundredths, using decimats and grids. Students represented decimals up to thousandths between 0 and 1 on a number line.
Religion: Students explored how the gifts of the Holy Spirit empower individuals for mission and service. They considered the role of the Holy Spirit in shaping personal values and beliefs and recognised the influence of the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit in daily life and spiritual growth. Students engaged in a rich discussion on the sacrament of Confirmation. They summarised and drew images or symbols associated with confirmation.
