Year 3/4 News

Learning Centre Two
It has been another very busy couple of weeks in LC2. Some of our Year 4's took the next step in their faith journey by making their first Eucharist. The rest of our Year 4's will take this step at the community mass in June.

English
Last week the Year 3's & 4's focused on the book ‘The Truck Cat’. On Wednesday, the 21st, we joined schools from across Australia for the National Simultaneous Storytime and listened to the author Deborah Frenkel read her book. The illustrator, Danny Snell, taught us how to draw Tinka the cat. Check out our creations.
This week our focus shifter to learning about the significance of ‘National Sorry Day.’ We explored a cultural story called 'Ceremony'.
Year 3's responded to comprehension questions about the text. They made text-to-self connections and used writing skills to reflect on some of the signs and symbols associated with ‘National Sorry Day.’ They had the opportunity to write a rhyming poem about 'Sorry Day' to show their understanding about the event.
The Year 4's used comprehension strategies, such as predicting, connecting, summarising and questioning, to expand on topic knowledge about the text. The students developed understandings on past, present and future tenses, and the impact these tenses have on meaning in a sentence. They learned how to create more specific descriptions in their writing by using adjectival clauses; for example, ‘Crossing the mountain range was difficult.’ to become ‘The mountain pass was dangerous when it rained.’
Mathematics
The Year 3's have focused on ‘Statistics and Probability.’ They explored efficient ways to collect and record data, and developed questions of interest and used surveys to gather information. The students used lists, tallies and symbols to record and display data and interpret their findings. They learned how to identify practical activities and everyday events that involve chance, and describe possible outcomes and events as ‘likely’ or ‘unlikely’ and identify some events as ‘certain’ or ‘impossible’, explaining reasoning.
Year 3W had a great time outside recording the colour of cars that drove past our school.
The Year 4 students explored and compared the geometric properties of two-dimensional and three-dimensional objects. They learned how to represent and approximate composite shapes and objects in their environment. This included using combinations of familiar shapes and objects. The students also learned how to recognise line and rotational symmetry of shapes, and create symmetrical patterns and pictures.
Inquiry
The Year 3's and 4's have continued their exploration of Media Arts. They explored the use of media technologies to create time and space through the manipulation of images, sounds and text to tell Creation stories. They explored how to create a sequence of images, sounds and text or a combination of these to show the beginning, middle and end of a story or event. The students had opportunities to write about and discuss the meaning of their own media artworks using appropriate reflective language.
Religion
In Religious Education, the Year 3 students explored the concept of ‘The Church.’ They examined the role of Mary and discipleship in founding the Church. The students learned how to interpret the meaning and value of discipleship and investigated examples of this. They also had opportunities to reflect on Parish community and ways it also enables discipleship.
The Year 4 students explored, ‘The Prophets.’ They investigated who these prophets were, what they did, when they lived, the challenges they faced, and why they were so important. The students examined scripture from the New Testament to determine historical settings at the time of the prophets. They also interpreted the roles of some major prophet characters in scripture, and reflected on their actions and words.
Wellbeing
The Year 3's and Year 4's have continued exploring how we respect all in our school community. They explored the concept of personal strengths, identified their own personal strengths and examined how we use our personal strengths to respect others. This included a particular focus on being aware of the personal space of others, recognising when others are feeling uncomfortable, and identifying strategies that can be used when others invade their personal space.
