Year 1/2 News

Learning Centre One
How are we already at the end of Week 6? We have had a lot going on in 1/2, such as Assembly, National Simultaneous Storytime, National Sorry Day and Wear Purple Day for Indigenous Literacy.
In literacy, we read the National Simultaneous Storytime book ‘The Truck Cat’. On Wednesday, the 21st, we sat down at 12pm and watched the author Deborah Frenkel read her book. We also had the illustrator, Danny Snell, teach us how to draw Tinka the cat. We reflected on what home means to us and how it makes us feel safe. We also read the book ‘Found’ by Bruce Pascoe, which links to Indigenous stories. We spoke about how the calf in the story might have been feeling at various stages in the story. In Little Learners Love Literacy, we finished looking at the phoneme ‘ar’ with the ‘ar, a and al’ spelling choices. We then looked at the phoneme ‘or’ with the following spelling choices ‘or, aw and ore’.
During Maths, we have been using number lines, number bonds and MAB blocks to help us with solving addition and subtraction equations. We have been looking at bridging to 10 when using number lines and using empty number lines, where we have to fill in the missing numbers.
In Religion, we have completed looking at how God shows his love to us through Jesus and his resurrection. We read many gospel stories, such as the Road to Emmaus, where Jesus appeared to the disciples after He rose again. We then moved into looking at the Church and how different people have varying jobs. We spoke about Pope Leo and what he does as the leader of the Catholic Church.
During Inquiry, we have continued looking at sharing meaning through various mediums. Linking to the story ‘The Truck Cat’, we painted a place that feels like home to us with water colours. We planned and sketched our plans and then made our good copy, which we shared on DOJO to share with our families. We also made collages in groups out of natural materials that we found outside, such as leaves, grass, sticks and bark. The collages were made to look like Australian animals.
In Wellbeing, we watched the Bluey episode called Movie, which speaks about fears and how we can overcome them. We identified the fears that we all have and what coping strategies we can use when we are in situations where our fears are present. Week 6’s Wellbeing task related to National Sorry Day and about how we can show respect to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.
Well done to the 1/2 students who received a Value Award for displaying the three school values, and to Kairaa for receiving Aussie of the Month at assembly this month.
We wore touches of Purple for National Sorry Day and raised money for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. Thank you to all students who wore a touch of purple and helped raise money and also had the turtles visit us for 'National Turtle Day'.
