A Word from Justin

Term 2, Week 6 - Friday 30th May, 2025

Dear Families and Students of OLSC

And just like that another fortnight has flown by.  We are already in the last half of term two - hard to believe.

Year 4 - Camp Information Night

Next week on Tuesday 3rd June at 7:00pm we have an online meeting for all Year 4s attending camp later this term.  We will be attending the overnight camp on Wednesday 2nd and Thursday 3rd July to Log Cabin Camp, Creswick.  Sandy will be sending a link today and resending to all families on Tuesday.  I ask all families and students to join us for this presentation.  There will be an opportunity for questions.  See you all online next Tuesday.

There is no expectation for campers or camp staff to attend school on Friday 44

World Turtle Day

May 23rd was World Turtle Day. This is an internationally acknowledged day that celebrates all turtles and raises awareness about the threats they face. The seniors learnt about this day and that turtles are at risk of extinction, especially marine turtles. They are increasingly losing out to human activity and their numbers are slow to recover.  It was great to have a couple of 'guest' turtles visit the different spaces last Friday.

Winter and Illness

With the onset of winter, there are invariably more illnesses in the community.  We ask that

all parents are cautious not to send students to school if unwell.  Unfortunately, we have found incidences of a child being unwell before school and sent along to 'see how you go.'  In the interest of keeping the whole community safe, we ask for extra vigiliance around illness and school attendance.

We have also had a number of cases of COVID in the senior school so please continue to test if unwell and remain absent from school while symptomatic.

School Closure Day

Reminder to all families that Tuesday 10th June (the day following the King's birthday) will be a school closure day.  There is care available through QB should families require this.

National Sorry Day & Reconciliation Week

On Monday 26th May, OLSC acknowledged National Sorry Day which marked the beginning of National Reconciliation Week. Each year on this day, we remember the Stolen Generations, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children forcibly removed from their families and communities. Many of the students and staff wore a splash of purple to school as a way to recognise the strength and resilience shown by Stolen Generation survivors.

Thank you to the students who brought a gold coin to donate to The Indigenous Literacy Foundation. Because of your generosity, we will be contributing $250 to this very special organisation. This money will be added to money collected later in Term 3 when we run another Great Book Swap at our school. If you have any children's books that you want to donate, please hold onto them until later in the year.

On Monday, all students in our school read books related to the Stolen Generation. They responded to these books in a variety of ways and have listened to some Dreamtime stories too. The Prep students created aboriginal flags and used paint to make beautiful birds with many colours.

QB Vacation Care July Holidays

The staff at Quantin Binnah have shared an overview of their vacation care for the upcoming school holidays.  The program looks great with lots of variety (See below).  I would recommend that bookings are made early as there is a possibility to book out.

Prayer for the New Church

The parish prayer for the new church is below.  Please feel free to include this in your family prayers as a new church for the Manor Lakes community would be a great feature of our parish.

First Eucharist / Community Mass

On Sunday 18th of May at our Community Mass 26 of our Year 4 students recieved the Eucharist for the first time.  Congratulations!

What a truly special and sacred moment in your faith journey.  The ceremony was absolutely beautiful – full of reverence, joy, and love.  You all participated with such grace and maturity, and it was clear how meaningful this day was for each of you.

This is a significant step in your spiritual life,  and we are so proud of how you embraced it with open hearts.  This mass was well supported by our community with 414 people in attendance.

On behalf of Hayley, Anthony, Leeza, Sandy, Milla, Anna and Helen well done, we’re all so proud of you!  I'd also like to thank the staff for preparing the students so well and John for his thorough planning of this special event.

Assembly Performances

At our mid-term assembly, two of our students performed for the school and showcased their keyboard skills.  Well done Zoe and Eason.  They are part of Michelle Wan's weekly Tuesday keyboard lessons.
