Staff Professional Learning Day

As mentioned in the Teaching and Learning Section of this week’s newsletter, last Friday, classroom and specialist teaching staff were involved in a professional learning day to build knowledge and skills related to explicit instruction.

Our Scotsburn teaching staff were split between Pleasant St PS and Mt Blowhard PS, looking at effective practice of explicit instruction. Scotsburn staff worked with Buninyong year-level specific staff to reflect on high-impact techniques that we had observed, as well as determine next steps in building our professional knowledge and skills. Scotsburn staff also identified some specific practices that can improve our teaching and learning program at Scotsburn.

Overall it was a very successful and worthwhile experience for all staff and we look forward to putting our new learning into action.

Creative Yard Play

We absolutely love the cooperative and creative play happening in the yard during these beautiful Autumn days! Currently out at the back of the campus, there is some amazing cubby building happening, with students co-creating their rules and way of playing, taking on all ideas and thoughts. So much fun!

Scotsburn Assembly this Friday

With the large amounts of events and activities happening each Friday so far this term, we will finally be able to have a Scotsburn assembly this week. We look forward to making it a big celebration of all the happenings so far this term.

See you in the shed at 3pm!

Toastie Tuesdays!

Another reminder that Toastie Tuesdays will continue every Tuesday, for the hefty price of $1! Don’t forget to send a gold coin on Tuesdays for those that would like a Toastie.

Yard Update

Last week we put the finishing touches on an application for funding to support the upgrade of our veggie patch and greenhouse. This has been long overdue and is a project that I know many parents are interested in being involved with. Getting this area up to scratch as a working community garden will be the final piece in our efforts to create an authentic sustainable learning experience for our students, following on from our previous kitchen upgrade and installation of the sustainability shed.

Should we be successful in our application, the process to receive funding will involve input and creation of creative presentations from our students, which will be a great experience.

More details to come soon…

Buninyong Playgroup Visit – Friday

This Friday morning, we will also have our first visit for the term from Buninyong Community Playgroup. We love welcoming them to the campus!

Mid Term Parent Meeting

Keep your eye out on the newsletter and Compass over the next few weeks for a date and time for a mid-term Scotsburn parent catch up. It is a good time for us to catch up as a parent group, to discuss all the happenings this term and any upcoming events. With School Council next week, it will be also a great opportunity for Jarrod to report back to our Scotsburn community.

Damascus College Visit

Tomorrow morning we will be welcoming some year 8 students from Damascus who are completing a community project where they have prepared an activity related to a picture story book. They will be working with our Prep - Grade 3 students 1:1, reading a story and completing some activities. We look forward to welcoming them to the campus.

SC1 Learning Snapshot

Writing

This week in Writing, our SC1 students have continued to develop their narrative writing skills. Using our planning booklets, we explored the elements of a story mountain: character, setting, action, problem, resolution, and conclusion.

Students then began turning their plans into their own narrative books, complete with illustrations. We’ve seen creative stories unfold, including cats getting stuck in trees, creepers driving motorbikes into rivers, and superhero animals coming to the rescue.

To be continued…

Story Dogs

We would like to thank Chris and Gertie for offering the children a fun and unique reading experience on a Thursday morning. We are up and running with the program and the children look forward to Gertie (Black Lab) and Chris coming in and offering children an extension to their usual reading opportunities. We look forward to giving all the students an opportunity to read to Gertie and Chris throughout the weeks and thank them for coming in and supporting our learning.

Kelly Sports

We have also been lucky enough to have Kelly Sports join us during our lunch break for some extra sporting opportunities. Lots of students have been taking up the opportunity to learn some new skills and get active.

Have a great week!

SC2 Learning Snapshot

Pizza Maths!!!

It is that time of the year again where students in SC2 were able to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of fractions and equivalent fractions, through pizza! Students also had to answer some adding and subtracting fraction questions before sampling some of the yummy goodness. This was a fun and practical way to round out our unit on fractions.

This week in Maths we are moving onto 3 dimensional shapes and nets.

We also welcome Erin this week again into SC2 for a full 2 week block of teaching and observations. She has already been teaching some reading and writing sessions this week, doing an amazing job!

Look forward to seeing you all during the week!

Scotsburn Intercampus Travel

At times, Scotsburn students will be transported between campuses in order to attend classes, assemblies, special days and events. On most occasions, transport required through the day will be by bus and occasionally private car for smaller groups of students. Parents may be asked to drop off or collect from the Buninyong campus if sessions are at the beginning or ending of a day.

We will always let you know of any upcoming travel arrangements via our newsletter, Compass, or via phone for smaller, more specific travel arrangements.

If you ever have any questions or concerns regarding intercampus travel, please contact your child’s teacher.
