Fantastic 3/4

Term 2 Week 4
3/4 Newsletter
Welcome to week 6 of term 2! The excursion to the Melbourne Museum was a huge success, with students enjoying all the different exhibitions, especially the Dinosaur Fossils. Students behaved with respect towards the exhibitions and the other guests at the museum. Thank you so much to Mr Duckett for organising such a great experience.
School photo day on June 2nd and our amazing book fair on the 26-30th May.
Literacy:
Over the last 2 weeks, students have begun exploring a persuasive writing structure by using the OREO strategy.
O = Opinion
R = Reason
E = Evidence
O = Opinion
They have also been using themes raised in The One and Only Ivan to begin writing a draft version of a letter to a Political Minister to change the treatment of animals in captivity. Over the next couple of weeks, students will put together their own persuasive letter to persuade the reader that animals need to be treated with respect and care.
Phonics:
In Phonics, students have continued their learning about the role of the Silent Final E and how it can be used to prevent letters from appearing at the end of an English word or changing the sound of certain vowels in a word. They have also been learning how to use different suffixes and how these change letters in the base word.
Maths:
In Maths, students have been continuing their learning on different maths topics. Year 3 students have been continuing their learning about Multiplication and Division by representing them in arrays. Students have been identifying how many rows each array needs and how many objects need to be in each row. Year 4 students have begun their learning about fractions and decimals, and have enjoyed learning about parts of a whole and how these can be represented through the numerator and denominator and also through a decimal place.
Inquiry
In Inquiry, students have continued exploring First Nations Culture through a number of specific learning areas. In week 5, all students learned about The Dreaming and the way these stories acted to explain how certain parts of the world came to be. Students also wrote their own story in the style of the dreaming using Titles such as How the Kangaroo Learned to Jump, How the Echidna Got Its Spikes and How the Snake Got Its Scales. In week 6, students explored the different types of structures that First Nations People used for shelter and then designed their own shelters made entirely from natural materials.
