Terrific 2

Term 2 Week 6 2025 - Friday 30th of May
What have we been up to?
Dear Parents, Carers, and Students,
It’s been a busy and exciting few weeks in Year 2!
In Literacy
We’ve just wrapped up our unit on the four sentence types. Students learned how to use different punctuation marks and were able to independently write four different types of sentences. They also explored how to use conjunctions to make their writing more detailed and exciting and they did an amazing job!
In reading, we enjoyed the text The Big Rain Coming by Katrina Germein, beautifully illustrated by Bronwyn Bancroft. As a class, we created our own story called The Big Storm Coming. After writing the beginning and middle together, students had the opportunity to write their own unique endings and illustrate them. They were so proud to share their stories aloud with the class.
We’ve also been focusing on building reading fluency. Each day, students practise reading a paragraph aloud, working on the same passage throughout the week. It’s wonderful to see their confidence grow as they become more fluent and comfortable reading in front of their peers.
In Maths
In Maths, students have recently completed their assessments on addition and subtraction, showing great progress in their understanding and strategies.
We’ve now moved into our new unit on measurement, and the students are already fully engaged! We began by exploring how to measure objects informally using everyday items. The students had a fantastic time estimating, comparing lengths, and testing their predictions.
We’ve also been learning about balancing scales and using them to compare the weight of different objects. It’s been great to see the students working together, thinking critically, and applying their problem-solving skills in hands-on activities.
Inquiry
We’re excited to launch a powerful new inquiry unit this term focused on Indigenous perspectives. Students will explore the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of First Nations peoples, with a focus on deepening understanding, respect, and appreciation. This unit encourages curiosity, empathy, and meaningful connections to country and community.
Leader in Me and Respectful Relationships:
Students continue to take part in their weekly Leader in Me lessons, where they are building important life skills such as responsibility, goal setting, and teamwork. These sessions support students in becoming proactive learners and
confident leaders, both in and out of the classroom. Many have set personal and academic goals, and we encourage you to ask your child about their goals and how they are working towards them.
We are also continuing our Respectful Relationships program, which helps students develop emotional awareness, understand feelings, and build resilience. Through these lessons, students are learning strategies to manage emotions, strengthen friendships, and respond positively to challenges.
Home Readers
Please remember that READERS ARE CHANGED EVERY MONDAY. Students will take 2 books each Monday, where they can alternate throughout the week. Please remember, students need to read these everyday as they are all in grade 2 now.
Readers will only be changed on a Monday. This may be repetitive for your child however that is the purpose. We are focusing on fluency and confidence.
Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or would like to discuss your child’s progress.
Thank you for your support, Kayla Mugford Hannah Jackson Sam Downs

What’s Coming Up in Year 2
We have an exciting few weeks ahead across all learning areas!
In Literacy, students will continue developing their decoding and writing skills by focusing on the sounds oo, ew, and ui. We’ll also begin exploring the concept of perspective in stories. Looking closely at a character’s actions, thoughts, and feelings through their point of view. Perspective comes from the Latin root meaning “to look through” or “perceive,” which ties in beautifully with our new class text, Mirror by Jeannie Baker. This visually stunning and thought-provoking book will help us explore different perspectives and cultural experiences in a meaningful way.
In Maths, we’ll continue our measurement unit by indirectly comparing and ordering masses. Students will use hands-on activities to solve balance scale problems, helping them to build a strong understanding of weight and comparison strategies.
