Principal Team Update

Hi BPS families,
Last week was National Reconciliation Week. This is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. The theme this year, "Bridging Now to Next," reflects the ongoing connection between past, present, and future, and encourages us to move forward together—guided by past lessons—to build a more united and respectful nation. To learn more about how our school acknowledged Reconciliation Week, please take a look at our Topic Spotlight section in this newsletter.
On Saturday 24th May, we acknowledged Reconciliation Week through the Ellen Jose Art Awards ceremony at Bayside City Council. Mrs Olivia Winfield, alongside Mr David Tapp and Miss Grace Hulls, proudly attended the council’s awards ceremony for the event, along with a number of our students and families. Out of 193 entries, the following Beaumaris Primary School students were selected as finalists by the late Ellen Jose’s family: Annabella in Year 2, Harry in Prep, Edie in Year 6, Isla in Year 6, and Kalani in Year 6.
The Beaumaris Primary winning finalists, selected by Josh Jose Toscana and the Mayor, Cr Hanna El Mouallem, were as follows:
- Prep to Year 3 category – Harry, 3rd place
- Year 4 to Year 6 category – Kalani, 3rd place, and Edie, 1st place
Congratulations to our winners, finalists, and all who entered. What an achievement and a wonderful initiative to take part in, to recognise and mark Reconciliation Week.
You may enjoy viewing the entries that Bayside City Council has shared online. The Prep to Year 3 entries can be viewed here, and the Year 4 to Year 6 entries can be viewed here. The artworks are currently on display at the Bayside City Council Corporate Centre until July 25th. You are welcome to celebrate our students’ achievements by visiting the gallery space.
It’s been a busy fortnight of Cross Country, with two major events taking place. In Week 5, a large number of Year 4–6 students proudly represented our school at the District Cross Country. Our team achieved an outstanding result, placing 3rd overall. Well done to everyone who participated — we are so proud of your efforts and your willingness to give it a go!
Several students progressed to the Division Cross Country competition — Josh, Alannah, Ella, Kalani, Ethan, Liv, Hannah, and Paxton — which was held in Week 6 at Cornish College. It was another day of fantastic results, with Beaumaris Primary having three students finish in the top 20. A special congratulations to Olivia in Year 4, who won the 9/10 girls' race. Congratulations to everyone involved!
Our students continue to impress with their determination, initiative, and willingness to get involved - whether it's through co-curricular events like visual art competitions and sporting events, classroom learning tasks, or leadership roles in the yard during lunchtime. They approach opportunities with a positive, can-do attitude and represent both our school and themselves with pride.
Welcome Mr Daniel Farmer to the BPS staff team. Mr Farmer will be teaching Environmental Science, alongside Mrs Prendergast, whilst Mrs McManus is on leave. We hope your child enjoyed meeting and getting to know Mr Farmer in their Environmental Science class last week.
We are looking forward to welcoming many visitors to our school next Friday, 13th June, for our annual Grandparents and Special Persons Day event. This is a wonderful opportunity for a grandparent, multiple grandparents, or another special person in your child's life (perhaps yourself!) to visit our school and spend time together.
There are several components to this event. From 2:00 p.m., visitors are invited to join us for afternoon tea in the SALC, featuring a special performance by our Glee Club. This portion is for visitors only. Following this, we will move outside to come together for a whole-school assembly. After the assembly, students and their visitor/s will move to their classroom to participate in an activity together. Visitors are welcome to move between classrooms if needed.
Please share these details with a grandparent or special person in your child's life whom they would like to invite.
Thank you to 1st Beaumaris Sea Scouts who visited our school and generously donated some books about ANZAC Day to our library.
Have a great rest of your week.
David, Grace, Keli and Ellen
